The Jayhawk Women’s Basketball team started slow, but it didn’t prevent a 61-52 victory over the Cougars of Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

After falling behind 19-6 after the first quarter, Kendall Zoulek (Shelby) scored 11 of her game high 13 points in the 2nd quarter. The defense also buckled down to allow only 6 points to KVCC for a 33-25 half time lead. In the second half of the game, MCC struggled from the free throw line, but the Cougars could not overcome the poor shooting in the 2nd quarter and the Jayhawks held on for the win.

“It was a good come from behind win tonight,” said Head Coach Jason Cooper. “I’m proud of how the team continued to fight throughout the game and pulled out a victory.”

Zoulek finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds; MCC also got balanced scoring from the trio of Calla Miller (Fremont), Emmerson Goodin (Newaygo) and Karleigh Jeffries (Whitehall) with 10 points each. Miller added 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocks while Goodin and Jeffries each finished their double double with 10 rebounds. Kayla Fisk (Newaygo) added 9 points, 8 boards, 2 assists and 4 steals.

The Jayhawk’s record stands at 4-2 in the newly formed Northern Conference and they will take the court again Saturday, 12/3 at Southwestern Michigan College at 1:00 pm.
