The 11th ranked Jayhawks earned a 4 – 0 win against a tough Jackson College team tonight to advance to the Region XII championship game.
The Jets came out strong to start the game putting plenty of pressure on the backline of Jaqi Bocanegra (Zeeland East), Tia Martinez (Zeeland West), and Alexa Musk (Mona Shores). At the 37-minute mark, Emma Dykema (Reeths-Puffer) worked to find a loose ball in front of the goal and found the back of the net for the opening goal of the game. The Jayhawks held the 1 – 0 lead into halftime. Just 67 seconds into the second half, Lydia Sowles (Mona Shores) put the Jayhawks up 2 – 0 with an impressive goal, assisted by Iris Herald (Reeths-Puffer). 7 minutes later, it was Sowles with the assist to Herald on a well-timed run through the Jet’s back line scoring the 3rd goal of the game. At the 58-minute mark in what could be the goal of the season, Emma Martin (Reeths-Puffer) broke loose getting to the end line before serving a perfectly placed ball in front of the goal where Tori Van Tamelen (Hamilton) hammered a header to the back of the net putting the Jayhawks up 4 – 0. Grace Caywood (Zeeland West) earned her nation-leading 11th shutout of the season.
MCC will face #8 ranked Schoolcraft College in the Regional finals on Sunday, 10/30.
