JAYHAWKS WRESTLERS HAVE SOLID SHOWING AT THE NJCAA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT Mid America Center – Council Bluffs, IA – NJCAA National Championships – March 3rd & 4th, 2023.
The MCC Jayhawks traveled to the NJCAA National Championships with 8 wrestlers looking to have a great showing. The Jayhawks finished 31st overall behind the strong showing of Kayleb Venema of Whitehall who went 3-2 and scored bonus points in all three wins at 184 pounds, falling just one match short of All-American Honors. Max Brown, also of Whitehall, scored a fall in the first round of consolations to contribute to the team score and Dakota Veltman of Byron Center went 2-2, contributing one win by fall and another with a thrilling, come from behind overtime victory. The Jayhawks finished 31st overall. “We went out with hopes of a top 20 finish and some of our guys earning All-American Honors,” said Coach Brunger. “While falling just short of our goals, I am extremely proud of these guys. We had a tough first round, with every wrestler losing their first-round match. To be able to bounce back from that and score 11 team points with our back against the wall was very impressive. I want to tip my cap to the sophomores who will be moving to the next chapter in their lives, Jacob Blawat, Aydan Sturtevant-Roesly, Kyler Kolk, Gerrit Andrus and Kayleb Venema, you are Jayhawks for life, and we thank you!”
