Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver

Muskegon Community College established the following to accommodate the enrollment of senior adults residing in Muskegon County:

  • Students must be legal residents of Muskegon County, 60 years or older as of the first day of the semester and must present a valid Michigan Driver’s license or State ID to the Student Welcome Center for verification.
  • Senior Citizen applicants must meet all Muskegon Community College admission requirements.
  • Senior Citizens must meet all course requirements, which may include placement testing.
  • Senior Citizens may register as degree seeking or auditing (non-credit seeking) students in courses on a space available basis without payment of tuition.  However, students will be responsible for cost of supplies, course fees, registration fee, technology fee, and infrastructure fee.
  • Senior Citizens must meet the MCC degree requirements if degree seeking and are recommended to attend New Student Orientation.
  • Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver does not cover secondary admit programs: Medical Assistant, Nursing, and Respiratory Therapy Programs.
  • Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver does not apply toward continuing education courses, customized business training, or other seminars that may be offered by MCC.
  • The Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver will be applied after all gift aid (such as grants and scholarships that do not need to be repaid) and employer sponsorships.

Let’s Get Started

    • Senior Citizen applicants must meet all College admission requirements. If you never attended Muskegon Community College in the past, or it has been more than three years since your last class, you will need to apply for admission.
    • Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver does not cover secondary admit programs.
      • Certain programs at MCC require students to complete a specific set of courses at or above a required GPA level. Once students have completed these requirements, the next step is to submit a secondary admissions application.
        • Medical Assistant, Nursing, and Respiratory Therapy Programs are secondary admit programs.
  • Submit a final high school, GED, and/or college transcript to MCC
    • MCC can only accept official transcripts, which can be sent to us through the online  Parchment system, or mailed directly from your high school.

Call Testing Services at (231)777-0394 to schedule a time.

    • Prepare for the placement test by going to http://www.muskegoncc.edu/testing/mcc-placement-test/ and scrolling down to where it states REVIEW
    • Placement assessments are in Reading, Writing, and Math. You may be exempt from portions of the placement test if you meet one of the following:
      • Transfer Students: 15 or more college credits (100 level or higher) with a minimum 2.0 GPA will waive some placement testing, please see a counselor.
      • Official ACT/SAT/MME/MEAP scores or college transcripts must be on file to waive placement testing.
      • Prospective Nursing Students cannot use MME scores or college credits to waive the reading test

PLEASE NOTE: All placement scores have a three-year limit

  • Schedule a New Student Orientation

    • Orientation is mandatory for any new students seeking credentials (certificate or degree) to MCC, transfer students with fewer than 12 earned credits.
  • Make an appointment with a counselor

    • Please make sure steps 1 and 3 are completed before you meet with a
    • MCC counselors specialize in specific areas of study to better help students determine which classes are necessary for the degree or program they are pursuing. Make an appointment with an academic counselor by visiting the Counseling and Advising web-page http://www.muskegoncc.edu/counseling-and-advising-center/
    • Students with disabilities make a counseling appointment with the Disability Support Services by calling 231-777-0309 or visit them in room 2046A.
  • Register for Classes Online

    • Obtain your Username and Password.
    • Click here for instructions on how to register or audit classes.
    • Get your MyMCC One card two weeks after registering for classes.
    • Check your MCC email often for information and notifications.
    • Get your textbooks

Log in to MyMCC using your new username and password. If you need help registering for classes, the staff at the Student Welcome Center will assist you.

    • Senior Citizens may enroll as degree or auditing (non-credit seeking) students in courses, on a space-available basis, without payment of tuition. However, students will be responsible for:

      • technology fee
      • infrastructure fee

The Senior Citizen Tuition Waiver will be applied after all gift aid (such as grants and scholarships that do not need to be repaid) and employer sponsorships.

Tuition bills are available online in MyMCC.  You may pay for classes online, on campus at the Student Welcome Center, or call (231) 777-0249.

Muskegon Community College has partnered with the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) to offer electronic transcripts through an online ordering system. NOTE: There is a $5 fee per transcript recipient via major credit card or debit card.

    • New to MyMCC?  Forgot your password to MyMCC?  Go to Log-In Help to set up your account today!
    • Request to Change Your Start Date:  If you applied for the wrong semester, you can request to have it be changed by completing our Start Date Change Form.  This will NOT change your program (see above section), but just your start date.
    • Change Your Program of Study:  Muskegon Community College is a great place to explore different fields to find the perfect match for your skills, interests and goals. Many college students change their major at least once before graduation. If you’ve decided you want to change your program, it’s no problem, although you should meet with a counselor in the Counseling and Advising Center to make sure you’re taking the courses you need to reach your new goals. To make the change official, complete and submit the Program Change Form. If you receive this error message when you attempt to register for classes:

      – Registration not allowed in UG courses without an academic program – 

      You will need to complete and submit the Program Change Form. This means you have a program listed which is no longer offered at the college or you have never had a valid academic program entered for you. If you have questions, contact the Counseling and Advising Center at 231-777-0362.
