2019 ahFest Film Festival Each Wednesday Evening in October

On Wednesday evenings throughout October, the 2019 Muskegon Writers’ Series will show and discuss five films associated with “Hope,” the 2019 Muskegon Arts and Humanities Festival (ahFest) theme this year.

All the films will be shown at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 W Webster Ave. in downtown Muskegon. Admission is free. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and each film will promptly begin at 6 p.m. with a brief introduction by MCC English and Film instructor Mary Tyler. An optional discussion led by Tyler will follow each film.

Intouchables
October 2

The Intouchables, a 2011 French buddy comedy-drama film, became the second biggest box office hit in France months after its release. The plot centers on an aristocrat, who becomes a quadriplegic from a paragliding accident, and the young man he hires from the projects to be his caregiver.
Green Book
October 9

Green Book, a 2018 American biographical comedy-drama, was directed by Peter Farrelly. Set in 1962, the film is inspired by the true story of a tour of the Deep South by African American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and Italian-American bouncer Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) who served as Shirley’s driver and bodyguard. The film won Academy Awards for the Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and for Best Supporting Actor (Ali).
The Fisher King

The Fisher King, a 1991 film by Terry Gillam. After shock jock Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges) inadvertently provokes a caller into murdering a group of innocent people in a Manhattan bar, he grows depressed and turns to booze. As he’s about to hit rock bottom, Lucas meets a homeless man named Parry (Robin Williams), whose wife was killed by the caller Lucas pushed to the brink. Mentally scarred by his loss, Parry spends his days searching for the Holy Grail. Lucas, feeling culpable for the poor man’s plight, pledges to help him in his quest. Mercedes Ruehl won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
The Mustang

The Mustang, a 2019 film by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, is the story of Roman Coleman (Matthias Schoenaerts), a violent convict, who is given the chance to participate in a rehabilitation therapy program involving the training of wild mustangs. Jason Mitchell, Gideon Adlon, Connie Britton and Bruce Dern appear in supporting roles. The Mustang is based on an actual rehabilitation program in Carson City, Nevada.

A surprise horror film will be shown the night before Halloween. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed for the Halloween Costume Contest. Prizes will be awarded.
