54th Annual Student Art and Design Award Winners Announced

Rachel Frucci's ceramic won first place at the 54th Annual MCC Student Art and Design Awards

The award winners in the 54rd Annual MCC Student Art and Design Exhibition, featuring artwork of outstanding merit produced by leading student artists over the past academic year, were announced during a May 30 reception in Overbrook Art Gallery, where the exhibit continues through Sept. 6.

The artwork, which was selected by MCC’s art faculty from more than several thousand student pieces produced during the past year, was judged by Tim Fisher, professor of art at Grand Valley State University.

The winners were:

  • $400 First Place: Rachel Frucci – Ceramics I: “Untitled,” ceramic
  • $300 Second Place: Issac Zenz – Art Appreciation: “Anything but a Box,” cardboard
  • $200 Third Place: Shelby Cain – Drawing I: Texture Study, mixed media
  • $100 Honorable Mentions:
    Abbie Sawin – Painting I: Full Color Still-Life, oil paint on paper
    Abigail Naylor-Tatterson – 3-D Form and Space: “Altered Book,” paper
    Kaylie Wetherell – Drawing I: Paper Still-Life Value Range, graphite
    Abigail Postema – 2-D Form and Surface: “Propaganda,” reductive relief print
  • President’s Purchase Award: Mystic Hayes – Painting I: Hamlet Soliloquy-Inspired Collage, oil print on paper. The purchase award, chosen by MCC, was selected for display on campus as part of MCC’s Permanent Art Collection.
