Public Invited to Join Detroit Excursion on Aug. 11

The public is invited to join a Detroit excursion on Friday, Aug. 11, with visits to the Solanus Casey Center, Motown Museum and Greektown. Sponsored by the MCC Experiential Learning Center and the Fr. Phil Legacy Project, the bus leaves from St. Francis De Sales Church parking lot at 6:30 a.m. and returns at 10 p.m.

The $110 cost of the trip covers motor coach travel and admission fees to the Solanus Casey Center and Motown Museum as well as lunch at the Solanus Center. Dinner is not included.

Inspired by the life and example of Venerable Solanus Casey, the Center strives to be a place of pilgrimage, healing, reconciliation, and peace. Fr. David Preuss will lead an hour-and-a-half tour through the Center and provide background information on the service of Fr. Casey. The visit includes a catered lunch and free time for reflection.

In the afternoon, participants will step into an era of music magic when they visit Hitsville, USA – the birthplace of Motown Music. They will stand where the Temptations, Four Tops, Miracles and Supremes recorded their famous songs. Participants will even be invited to sing a few bars of a favorite Motown classic in the legendary Studio A.

Afterward, the excursion will make a quick visit to John King Books, one of the largest rare and used bookstores in the country with three million books and growing.

No trip to Detroit is complete without a stop for dinner in Greektown. The traditional center of Detroit’s Greek community, the historic district is one of the last surviving Victorian-era commercial streetscape in downtown Detroit. Participants will be able to choose from over 20 authentic Greek restaurants, all within walking distance of the bus.
