“Angels in America” at Overbrook Theater Feb. 18-22

2/21/2015 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

$10

Playwright Tony Kushner’s Tony Award-winning “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches” will be staged at MCC’s Overbrook Theater on Feb. 18-22.

Set in 1985 during the AIDS crisis and President Ronald Reagan’s second term, “Angels in America” features historical and fictional characters, blurs fantasy and reality, and addresses socio-sexual themes. The play contains strong sexual situations, explicit language, and nudity; MCC’s Center for Theater is recommending it for mature audiences.

Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 18-21 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for MCC students. Tickets go on sale on Monday. Feb. 9. Call (231) 777-0324 for ticket information.

“Angels in America” is a landmark, controversial stage work that won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for drama and Broadway’s prestigious Tony Award as best play. At its center, the story of “Angels in America” focuses on two couples: one a Mormon husband and wife, the closeted young lawyer Joe Pitt and his Valium-hallucinating spouse Harper; the other two gay men, Louis Ironson and his partner who is dying of AIDS, Prior Walter.

Into their spheres come such real-life characters as the right-wing lawyer Roy Cohn and the ghost of convicted spy Ethel Rosenberg whom Cohn arranged, through his clout, to have executed in 1953; and such fictional characters as a former drag queen named Belize, an Eskimo, the titular Angel, and visitations of two of Prior’s namesake ancestors.

The number of Kushner’s characters exceeds MCC director Sheila Kulp Wahamaki’s eight-actor cast, and several performers will play more than one role — and sex. The cast and principal characters include Dakotah Salazar as Cohn, Korbin S. Mulder as Joe, Tayler Zuidema as Harper, D’marco Hughes as Belize, Dakota King as Louis, Kristopher Arnold as Prior, Jackson Fitzgerald as Joe’s mother, and Adrianne Lewis as The Angel.

The artistic staff includes: assistant student director Dee Runions; set, lighting and sound designer Tom Harryman; costume designer Susan Eyler; dramaturge Stephen Schmidt; scenic painter and construction head Brian Goodman; and wig-and-hair designer Bill Abbott.

After the Feb. 20 performance, Schmidt will moderate a talkback with the cast, crew and audience.
