Banned Books Reading

9/26/2018 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Free

In conjunction with Banned Books Week on Sept. 23-29, 2018, Muskegon Community College will host an event on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Blue and Gold Room. Excepts will be read from books that have been challenged and banned in schools, libraries, and communities across the nation.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Banned Books Week is coordinated by the Banned Books Week Coalition, an international alliance of diverse organizations, which includes the American Library Association, joined by a commitment to increase awareness of the annual celebration of the freedom to read.

The Coalition seeks to engage various communities and inspire participation in Banned Books Week through education, advocacy, and the creation of programming about the problem of book censorship.

“People should attend the MCC Banned Books Reading to be part of the activism which safeguards our First Amendment rights and to encounter some great literature which they might not otherwise know,” said MCC English Instructor Theresa Kanoza.

For more information on the MCC event, contact Kanoza at theresa.kanoza@muskegoncc.edu or Lisa Anderson, MCC faculty librarian and archivist, at lisa.anderson@muskegoncc.edu.
