Muskegon Community College will celebrate the grand opening of its Art and Music Building on Friday, August 23, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Visitors should park in the Stevenson Center East Entrance parking lot and enter the building through the Stevenson Center.

  • Diana Osborn, MCC Board of Trustees Chair;
  • Tim Froncek, jazz musician and MCC music faculty member;
  • Ken Foster, retired MCC art faculty member
  • Gwenneth Bean, MCC alumna and professional operatic soloist;
  • Jill Black, MCC student;
  • Tom Harryman, MCC Arts and Humanities Chair; and
  • Alexander Zonjic, professional jazz and classical flutist.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony and donor wall reveal, attendees will be able to tour the new facility.

The Art and Music Building is the former Applied Technology Building, situated adjacent to the Stevenson Center and the Outdoor Learning Center. Beginning in the fall of 2018, extensive renovations totaling $9 million transformed the site into an expansive and modern home for MCC’s art and music programs.

For the past half century, music has been housed in the lower floor of the MCC Frauenthal Fine Arts Center, while art classes have been taught in a converted pole barn at the far end of the East Entrance parking lot.

The Art and Music Building features a window-lined student lounge, which overlooks the Outdoor Learning Center and is positioned at the confluence of the art and music wings.

Inside the music wing, spaces include an acoustical medium ensemble room with a practice area for up to 60 performers; a keyboard lab; three acoustically controlled teaching suites; six individual sound-controlled practice rooms; student instrument storage lockers; a music library room; and a college instrument storage room. An unfinished large ensemble room will provide practice space for 90 players and the ability to allow two groups to rehearse at the same time.

The art wing encompasses a 3D art studio for sculpture students; a painting studio; an advanced drawing studio; a printmaking studio; a ceramics studio; a kiln room with three kilns for firing ceramics; a woodshop; a vented spray booth; a tiered lecture/viewing classroom; faculty offices; an open studio for students; a matting and collection room; and an art supply room.
