“Spring Awakening” in Overbrook Theater

2/23/2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

$5 – $10

The MCC Center for Theater will present “Spring Awakening,” a musical by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik, on Feb. 20-24 in Overbrook Theater.

In their dynamic re-imagining of Frank Wedekind’s once-banned and still provocative German play from 1891, Sater and Sheik have created a groundbreaking rock musical about adolescent love, the trials of puberty, and the friendships that young people build in the face of an uncomprehending world. The new  “Spring Awakening” holds up a mirror to our own time and has become the musical of a new generation.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday, with a 3 p.m. Sunday matinee scheduled on Feb. 24. “Talk Back with the Actors,” which takes places following the Friday, Feb. 22 show, will be led by MCC Counselor Seth York.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the Overbrook Theater Box Office. Tickets are $10 for public and $5 for MCC students, staff, and faculty.  Call (231) 777-0324 to reserve tickets.

The play, which contains mature themes, is directed by MCC Theater Instructor Sheila Kulp Wahamaki with musical direction by Philip David DeYoung and choreography by Erin Robere.

The acting ensemble is comprised of MCC students Tiffany Bartlett, Allison Boerema, Raymond Brock, Taylor Freed, Cole Halterman, Isaac Hunter, Spencer Kniat, Melanie Lamrock, Brandon Lemieux, Aaron Ponce, Katrina Smith, and Rachel Wade. They are joined by Muskegon community professional actor Paul Dickens-Jacobs.

Assisting in presenting the musical are MCC Student Director Stephanie Kennert, Set Designer Tom Harryman, Lighting Designer Jim Allen, Costume Designer Susan Eyler, Sound Technician Mike Council, and Hair Designer Bill Abbott.
