Artists’ Talk and Reception in Overbrook Gallery

March 21 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

| Free

An opening reception and talk by the artists for the current Overrook Galley exhibit, “Exquisite Corpse Project: Head-to Toe & In-between,” will take place on Wednesday, March 21, from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Overbrook Theater Lobby. The talk takes places from 4-5 p.m. in Overbrook Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

The exhibit features artwork by 24 members of the Southwest Michigan Printmakers (SWMP), and continues through April 20.

Originating from the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts’ print studio in the mid-1970s, the Southwest Michigan Printmakers (SWMP) is a diverse and informal group of regional artist/printmakers dedicated to the creation of hand-made and fine art prints. Meeting bi-monthly, the group encourages artists working in printmaking and promotes excellence in the various print mediums.

Through exhibitions of their works, SWMP helps to encourage public knowledge, understanding, and support for printmaking. Since 2016, the group has accepted invitations to exhibit with Olivet College, Gallery Uptown, NCCA-Artsplace, Carnegie Center for the Arts, VanSingel Gallery, and Muskegon Community College.

“Exquisite Corpse is an early surrealist parlor game where a compilation of words or images are collectively assembled,” explained Vicki VanAmeyden, the SWMP Project Coordinator. “The collection of fine art prints in ‘Head-to-Toe & In-Between’ is in the surrealist spirit that embraces chance relationships.”

Last fall, 24 SWMP members responded to a challenge to participate in the project and to create a print in an edition of six using one of four randomly distributed section templates lettered A, B, C, or D, added VanAmeyden. Artists were asked to consider having their 15”x11” image extend off the paper on all sides using any print media they desired, and to use the templates provided for continuity between sections. When exhibited, four prints are randomly assembled to make six Exquisite Corpse figures.

“The overwhelming success of the project is due to the commitment of the SWMP participants to fine art printmaking and to each other,” said VanAmeyden. “Heartfelt hugs of appreciation to all the artists for their participation and wonderful print productions.”

The participating artists are: Lorrie Abdo, Doug Berger, Sue Caulfield, Lee Ann Frame, Ben Groggel, Ali Hansen, Jerry Harty, Tamara Hirzel, Martin Hubbard, Bev Hundley, Debbi Kreps, Kelsi Kreps, Honore Lee, Jerry Mackey, Deb Mattson, Dave Middleton, Carol Myers, Donna Myers, Jenna Para, Carol Paris, Katie Platte, R.
