Fall 2019 Creative Writing Contest Winners Announced

The winners in Muskegon Community College’s Fall 2019 Creative Writing Contest, organized by the MCC English and Communications Department and the Muskegon Writers’ Series, have been selected.

The top places in each category are:

POETRY
First Place: James O’ Banion for “By the Threshold”
Second Place: Morgyn Weinert for “Sundays are a Battlefield”
Third Place: Madeline Baker for “I am Woman”

FICTION
First Place: Taylor Strand for “Her”
Second Place: Taylor DePouw for “Lily’s Friends”
Third Place: Benjamin Wassell for “A Mid-Week Morning” 

CREATIVE NON-FICTION
First Place: Lauren Streng for “An Outhouse on Washington”
Second Place:  Ashlyn Gonzalez for “Open Letter to My Cell Phone”
Third Place: Madison Boone for “What to Remember”

The first place and second place finalists in the creative non-fiction, fiction and poetry categories will have their work automatically submitted to the Michigan state-wide community college writing contest sponsored by LAND (Liberal Arts Network for Development), an organization committed to community college faculty and student excellence.

Those chosen among the top three in each statewide category will receive their awards at the LAND conference on February 5-7, 2020 in Ann Abor, MI and will have their works appear in the LAND publication.
