Free golf, fitness and dance classes, and guided walks are among the free activities Muskegon Community College is offering during Muskegon Move 150 Week on Monday-Sunday, May 6-12, 2019.

Move 150, a national initiative sponsored by the Medical Fitness Association, focuses on getting participants moving, regardless of their abilities. The purpose of this program is to allow participants to reach 150 minutes of activity throughout the week.

Locally, MCC and Muskegon Rotary (1 in 21) are encouraging residents to be active participants and to pick up a BINGO-like card to track their activities.  The cards, which are available in the MCC Health and Wellness Center or in Room 400, can be returned, once completed, to be entered into raffles for a number of prizes donated by the community.

“Muskegon currently ranks 68th out of 83 Michigan counties overall and 57th in Health Factors,” explained Jason Shaughnessy, a member of the MCC Health, Physical Education and recreation department faculty.  “According to recent data, approximately 36 percent of Muskegon County residents are considered obese, and 26 percent are sedentary.  It’s time to step up to the plate and work to find solutions to these health issues that plague our community.”

Among the scheduled free activities offered by Muskegon Community College are:

  • Free golf at the MCC University Park Golf Course on Friday, May 10, and half-price for driving range balls
  • Zumba and Salsa Dance Classes at the Lakeshore Fitness Center on Friday, May 10, and Sunday, May 12
  • Open gym at the MCC Health and Wellness Center on Tuesday, May 7, and Thursday, May 9 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

The goal of the Medical Fitness Association initiative is to promote an increase in physical activity levels in all ages and to highlight the medical fitness difference. During this event, medical fitness centers throughout the U.S., Canada, and China are offering resources and educational opportunities for their communities promoting the medical fitness difference and raising awareness of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
