Muskegon Community College remains as one of Michigan’s best higher educational values after the MCC Board of Trustees approved a 5.0% tuition increase on June 20 for in-district students that goes into effect with the Fall 2012 semester.
This past year, MCC administrators made significant reductions and eliminated expenditures from the budget in an effort to operate efficiently and keep costs low. The difficult decision to increase tuition is in response to several factors, including:
- An estimated 2.3% reduction in local property tax revenue
- Increased payments the college is required to make to the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System
- A commitment to ensure student success, academic excellence, and maintain MCC’s 19:1 student-faculty ratio
The 5% increase is below the statewide average tuition increase (5.8%) for all Michigan community colleges in 2011-12. Meanwhile, MCC’s tuition rate of $85.50 per contact hour is one of the most affordable among Michigan’s 28 community colleges.
The 2012-13 rates approved by the MCC also included a 7% hike for out-of-district students to $153 per contact hour and a 7% increase for out-of-state students to $210 per contact hour. The technology fee increased 25% to $10 per student.
