Pride Month Talk on Sanctuary of the Gay Bar June 29 at MCC

In celebration of National LGBTQ Pride Month and to honor those who died in the Orlando tragedy, MCC will host a lunch and learn talk about “The Sanctuary of the Gay Bar” on Wednesday, June 29, at noon in the Blue and Gold Room.

The discussion, organized by MCC’s Office of Student Life and Title IX team, is free and open to the public. Participants can bring their own lunch. The MCC dining facility is closed for the summer.

Gay bars hold a long and important place in American culture. Often the only place where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people could socialize openly, the bar provided refuge and even served as a de facto community center.

Scheduled speakers include:

  • Dr. Andy Wible, MCC philosophy instructor who will be teaching LGBTQ Studies in the fall
  • Eli Fox, MCC Manager of Student Success and Veterans Affairs and Deputy Title IX Coordinator

The format will provide time for questions and reflections. For more information, contact Eli Fox in the Office of Student Life at (231) 777-0342.
