The Second Annual Muskegon Community College Welding Invitational for tech center students who reside in local counties takes place at MCC’s Sturrus Technology Center Welding Lab/Classroom in downtown Muskegon on Wednesday, May 8, 2019.

Students from Muskegon Tech Center, Newaygo County Regional Educational Service Agency (NCRESA) and Greenville High School will be competing for scholarships and welding gear.

“The competition provides an excellent opportunity for tech center students to compete in our new state-of-the art welding facility, “said Tom Sumerix, MCC welding instructor and coordinator of the Welding Invitational. “They get to show off their welding skills and have fun doing it. The invitational involves a written exam testing their knowledge and a project-based test using the gas metal arc welding process.”

MCC students will serve as judges for the competition. The tech center student participants will tour of the MCC applied technology facilities, enjoy lunch, and attend the afternoon awards ceremony. Phil Temple, the District 11 Director serving on the national American Welding Society Board of Directors, and Dan Rinsema-Sybenga, Dean of Workforce and Talent Development at MCC, will be the guest speakers and scholarship presenters.
