Organizers of the inaugural STEAM Along the Lakeshore hope to attract 1,000 students – from pre-K through 12th grade – and their families to downtown Muskegon on Saturday, May 7, to engage in science, technology, engineering, art and math activities.

The free event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hackley Park, Hackley Public Library, Lakeshore Fab Lab, Lakeshore Museum Center, and the Muskegon Museum of Art.

Organizers include the Hackley Public Library, Lakeshore Fab Lab, Lakeshore Museum Center, MiSTEM Network, Muskegon Community College, and Muskegon Museum of Art.

“The STEAM event is for the entire family,” said Cyndi Langlois, the associate dean of workforce and talent development at Muskegon Community College. “There’s no need to register. We want students and their families to get excited about classes and careers in STEAM fields. Local companies are experiencing a talent pipeline crisis. So, there’s a high demand for critical thinkers engaged in advancing technology fields.”

“Hopefully, the students who are exposed to the creative and interesting STEAM activities at each of the four downtown locations will think about the STEAM classes available in their schools and consider higher educational certificate and associate degree programs leading to vital high-tech careers.”

The first 1,000 children to participate will receive a sling bag with a STEAM kit and a “passport.” They will travel between the four anchor organizations for the event, participating in STEAM activities at each location. After completing each activity, they will get their passports stamped. Once they receive enough stamps, they will receive a STEAM Along the Lakeshore t-shirt. The activities will remain open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
