The College Singers in Concert Dec. 11

The College Singers from Muskegon Community College will present their annual holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 11, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 930 Creston St., Muskegon.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted to defray costs associated with the group’s performances throughout the year.

Directed by Catherine Gilson, The College Singers will feature baritone Matthew D. Robertson and will be accompanied by pianist Jennifer Smith Florip and Karen Burek on piano and flute.

Robertson, a Mona Shores High School and Alma College alumnus, regularly performs professionally in many churches and venues throughout the area and the state. Since 1998, he has been involved in Muskegon’s theater productions, most notably as Bill Sykes in “Oliver!” Tommy Albright in “Brigadoon” and Gaston in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” His recent classical credits include the bass solo work in the Faure and Mozart Requiems and Haydn’s “Mass in a Time of War.”

The College Singers’ holiday concert opens with “Wolcum Yole!” from A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten. Robertson and Burek are showcased on “For Us a Child is Born” (A Christmas Cantata) by Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert continues with “Panis angelicus,” “The Christmas Song” and “O Holy Night.”

“The Bells” by Emma Lou Diemer features Burek on piano, while “Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind” by John Rutter includes Burek on the flute. The College Singers will conclude with “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” by John Lennon and Yoko Ono and “Every Valley” by John Ness Beck with Robertson as soloist.
