Two MCC Students Named to 2019 All-Michigan Academic Team

Muskegon Community College students Taylor Carlson and Ashlyn Bryant were named to the 2019 All-Michigan Academic Team and honored on Monday, March 4, at a reception in Lansing sponsored by the Michigan Community College Association (MCCA) and Phi Theta Kappa international honor society.

Students were selected on the basis of academic achievement, community service involvement, and leadership accomplishment. The State Academic Teams are a division of the All-USA Community College Academic All-American Team sponsored annually by Phi Theta Kappa, USA TODAY and the American Association of Community Colleges.

In addition to the student honorees, the luncheon attendees included community college presidents, administrators and trustees, state legislators, and Phi Theta Kappa advisors. Also representing MCC were Provost and Executive Vice President John Selmon and Phi Theta Phi Beta Xi Xi Chapter Co-Advisor Patti D’Avignon.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,250 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States and throughout the world.

Ashlyn Bryant

Bryant, a graduate of Mona Shores High School, is completing her second year at MCC. She is Vice President of Fundraising for Beta Xi Xi.  At MCC, she has worked multiple jobs, including as a tutor in the MCC Tutoring Center. In the fall, she plans to transfer to Grand Valley State University, where she will major in business administration and minor in international business.

A graduate of Whitehall High School, Carlson is finishing her second year at MCC. She is Executive Vice President of Beta Xi Xi and serves as the 2018-2019 Michigan Regional Secretary.  At MCC, Carlson has participated in study abroad classes, including MCC’s Belize Field Studies program in Central America. She enjoys helping her community by offering low-cost and free senior photos for high school students.  In the fall, she plans to transfer to Michigan State University, where she will major in child psychology.
