Winter 2021 Creative Writing Contest Winners Announced

The winners in Muskegon Community College’s Winter 2021 Creative Writing Contest, organized by the MCC English and Communications Department and the Muskegon Writers’ Series, have been selected.

The top places in each category are:

Fiction:

  1. First Place – “The Appointment” by Taylor Strand
  2. Second Place – “Prey” by Keegan Colcleasure
  3. Third Place – “The Perspective” by James Switzer-Moe

Poetry:

  1. First Place – “I Stole the Lighter” by Keegan Colcleasure
  2. Second Place – “Ceramic, Painted to Look Like Wood” by Serena Schultz
  3. Third Place – “Summer’s Dream” by Lance Klemple

Photography:

  1. First Place – “Lowell, AZ” by Cassie Pierce
  2. Second Place – “Old Red” by Rhonda Mullenaux
  3. Third Place – “God’s Day” by Jordan Hill

Artwork:

  1. First Place – “Serenity” by Gypsy Bates
  2. Second Place – “One With Nature” by Kaylin Meyers
  3. Third Place – “Transformation” by Jessie Nieboer

Cover Art:

The prizes in the fiction, poetry, photography and artwork categories are $75 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place. The winning cover art entry will be featured on the cover of the MCC Spring 2021 River Voices, Muskegon Community College’s literary magazine showcasing the work of current students, faculty, and alumni.
