Windows 10 FAQ

What is the Windows 10 / Office 2016 Rollout project about?

The Business Department and Office of Information Technology are preparing to upgrade labs and classrooms to Windows 10 and Office 2016.

Why are MCC Computer Labs and Classrooms being considered for Windows 10 and Office 2016 upgrades for Fall 2016?

Windows 10 and Office 2016 are the current versions of Microsoft’s operating system and office applications.  Our students in Fall 2016 will have exposure to these applications.  Windows 10 is offered as a free upgrade to any users of Microsoft Windows 7 and above.  Also, students can download Office 365 for home use.  Office 365 has the same layout as Office 2016.  Textbook publishers have caught on to the large number of upcoming Windows 10 and Office 2016 installations, and they are already releasing content that is geared towards the new versions.

What computers will be upgraded and when?

This upgrade would be for the following student use computers in labs, along with the classrooms with presentation technology.  The target date would be August 19, 2016.  PLEASE NOTE:  Faculty & Staff computers will be scheduled for upgrades during the Fall 2016 and Winter 2017 semesters after the lab & classroom computers are complete.

How will I be impacted?

A survey will be conducted to determine what faculty are using to teach students in the labs and classrooms.  This information is needed to make sure that only applications that are in use will be included in testing Windows 10 and Office 2016.  Faculty and Adjunct Faculty participation is vital to collect information about applications.  Applications that are not reported in use will not be installed on labs and classrooms for Fall 2016.

Will this affect the summer semester?

For the most part, computers will remain unchanged, with two exceptions: 1) some open area computers will receive the Windows 10 upgrade ahead the other computers, so faculty will get an opportunity to test them out ahead of the Fall 2016 semester.  2)  Lab change requests for the summer semester will be part of the Fall 2016 Windows 10 / Office 2016 roll out.

Will I be able to test it before Fall Semester?

Yes.  There will be open lab availability to test the new operating system prior to the Fall 2016 start. The software will also be installed in the LIFT for testing.
