Overview
Established to help students realize their full educational potential at MCC, the College Success Center provides educational courses and educational resources intended to help MCC students improve their study habits as well as their academic skills in math, reading, and writing.
Kick Off Program
FREE Kick Off Workshops, Cash Incentives
Enroll today in a program with proven success! Kick Off delivers college readiness skills and $400 cash to adults who want to succeed in college. Those who successfully complete the program and online assignments will earn $400 cash and be better prepared to start college classes.
Kick Off your college experience with a free class and earn $400!
To enroll, you must have a high school diploma or GED and not yet have completed college-level math and English at any college or College Success Seminar at MCC.
- Classes will be hybrid: students must attend classes on MCC’s main campus. There will also be online assignments to complete.
- September 9th through October 23rd (times to be determined soon)
- Students must attend on the first day of the program to participate.
- Students who miss no more than three days during the program and return all loaner equipment will earn a $400 stipend for completing the program.
- Complete College Success Seminar and earn three credits
- Brush up math and English skills
- Learn to navigate the online learning system and complete online assignments outside of class
- Learn about campus resources that will support your success
- Learn about career pathways at MCC
- FREE loaner laptop, school supplies, food, and fun activities while you learn!

College Success Seminar (CSS 100A)
CSS 100 is highly recommended for students who need assistance navigating college. It is recommended for ALL students during their first semester at MCC. This course helps students develop, apply, and evaluate their own skills, abilities, and behaviors to achieve academic and personal success: effective note taking, productive study skills & test preparation, reading and remembering, critical thinking, library skills, navigating online course content, free career and job resources, stress management, relationships, connecting with campus resources, and winning attitudes.
Reading & Writing
Integrated Reading and Writing (RDG 090) is a support course for students enrolled in ENG 101. The course focuses on the development of effective critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. It does not count toward graduation but is designed to assist students in developing college-level reading and writing skills.
Course Description 3 Cr. Hr. – 3 Contact Hr. Prereq: None: Coreq: ENG 101 – This course will focus on the development of effective critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. Students will develop their ability to participate in academic discussions by reading and responding to academic texts and by writing clear sentences, effectively developed paragraphs, and short essays. This course is designed to support students enrolled in ENG 101 and must be taken during the same semester.
MCC offers two options for beginning your college writing requirements:
- RDG090 + ENG101: This pair of classes is your chance to complete college-level ENG101 with the support of RDG090. You will take both classes in the same semester with the same instructor and the same classmates. In RDG090, you will develop the reading, organizing, and editing skills required of the challenging research and writing assignments you are working on in ENG101.
- ENG101 (alone): In this course, you will develop the abilities to read critically, to think logically, to discuss intelligently, and primarily to write effectively using exposition, argumentation, and research.

Math
The College Success Center provides math support for students of all experience and skill levels. These include access to self-guided reviews, customized math refresher workshops, and one-on-one and group tutoring sessions.

If you need a review of your basic math skills, are a bit apprehensive about enrolling in a 100-level math course, or need to retake a placement test, the College Success Center offers several options for you.
Option 1: Free, Self-paced Review (For Any Student)
We use a program called ALEKS Placement, Preparation, and Learning (ALEKS PPL) to help determine students’ readiness for college mathematics courses. Participations in this program is free, and it includes guided support to help students refresh their foundational math skills. It is not required, but it is recommended if any of the following apply:
- It has been 10 years or more since you took any math class.
- You finished high school with a GPA below 2.2, or you don’t remember your GPA.
- You generally earned C’s or lower in high school math classes.
- You feel unsure about your ability to complete a college-level math course successfully without a refresher.
- Your ACCUPLACER NEXTGEN score was between 200–250.

Option 2: Metrics Placement Review (For Pre-Nursing Students Only)
Students wishing to enroll in MCC’s Nursing Program must meet specific math prerequisites, one of which is competency using the metric system. For those students who do not pass the metric system placement test, we offer a self-guided review that teaches students how to perform metric conversions as well as convert between the U.S. and metric systems of measurement. Upon completion, students are granted th ability to retake the placement test.

Writing Center
MCC’s Writing Center offers a welcoming atmosphere where students can discuss their writing in all stages of the writing process in any discipline. Writing professionals can assist with basic grammar questions, essay development, citing formats, research techniques, resumes, and other writing concerns. Take advantage of this FREE service.

The MCC Writing Center is designed to develop better writers. Appointments take place on campus in the College Success Center, or online in 20-minute Zoom meetings. On campus drop-ins are also welcome. This provides an excellent opportunity to receive help with an assignment no matter where you are in the writing process, no matter the discipline. In addition to utilizing your instructor’s office hours, we strongly encourage you to seize this additional support. Data shows utilizing the Writing Center improves students’ work by a full letter grade. If you find yourself struggling with writing in any form, for any discipline, visit the Writing Center.

Writing Center Professional Support
The Writing Center is comprised of writing professionals steeped in writing techniques and specialties. From assisting with the pre-writing process, to developing effective thesis statements, assisting with unity, organization, grammar and punctuation, resumes, and the revision process, the Writing Center offers all the professional insight and quality feedback you need in a welcoming environment to achieve success in your writing.

Drop-in Professional Support
Drop-in writing professional hours are a set schedule of times when a Writing Center professional will be available to assist with one’s writing without an appointment. Check the schedule by following the link above.
Online Professional Support
If one needs remote help with writing, the Writing Center’s writing professional can assist students via 20-minute Zoom appointments. Follow the link above to submit your writing ahead of time and book an online appointment.
Tutoring Services
MCC’s Tutoring Services is staffed by peer tutors who are students just like you! The purpose of our services is to provide academic support to MCC students and help MCC students grow in confidence as independent learners. Tutors are available both on campus and online and can help in a wide range of content areas, as well as offer general study support. Whether you’re feeling on top of your learning or a little behind, meeting with a tutor is a great way to stay on task or help you get on track.
