WHY HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATION?

The Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department is committed to increasing local health outcomes.  Muskegon is ranked among Michigan’s least healthy counties in MI (70th out of 83 via 2022 data).

  • Physical Education is required as part of the Associate in Science and Art (ASA) degree.
    • Students choose from 1 of 2 options:
      • For General Populations – Complete PEA 101A (Fitness, Wellness and Nutrition) AND an activity class of choice (weight training, walking/jogging, yoga, tai chi, golf, basketball, archery, kayaking, judo… etc)
      • For Exercise Science Majors – Complete PEA 121 (Online)
  • We offer an Exercise Science Pathway as a way to infuse wellness experts into the community.
  • We offer multiple certifications within the department, including NASM Personal Trainer, Certified Coach, and First Aid CPR through the American Red Cross.
  • In 2019 the HPER department helped to open the “Health and Wellness Center,” on MCC’s Main Campus. This $14.1 million facility includes state-of-the-art fitness area that includes 23 cardio machines, free weights, squat racks, bench presses and more.  The facility also has a full-size gymnasium, fitness lab, walking jogging track and locker rooms.
  • The HPER Department offers scholarships to incoming or current students who want to pursue a career in health, physical education and recreation. Apply here.
