MCC Lecture Series Presents: Explainable and Responsible AI
MCC’s 2026 Winter lecture series continues with Dr. Nikola Banovic, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Michigan, who will present “Explainable and Responsible AI.”
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Dr. Banovic will explore how modern artificial intelligence systems can be made transparent, understandable, and ethically grounded for a broad range of users—not just technical experts. Drawing on his research in human-computer interaction and explainable AI, Dr. Banovic will discuss the challenges of traditional “black-box” AI models and present approaches that help people interpret, evaluate, and trust AI decisions in real-world contexts.
The talk will cover key concepts in explainability and responsible AI, including methods for communicating why AI makes certain decisions, how to assess AI trustworthiness, and the role of human-AI interaction in fostering AI literacy. Attendees can expect insights into the social, ethical, and technical dimensions of building AI systems that are not only powerful but also accountable and transparent to end users.
