Tuesday, June 9, 2026
Muskegon Community College (MCC) will host five community-wide town hall meetings before MCC’s August 4, 2026, Operating Millage Restoration. The series will kick off this Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 11AM in Room 1300 of the Stevenson Center located at 221 South Quarterline Road. The second meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at 5:45PMat Hackley Public Library at 316 West Webster Avenue. The following day, on June 17, 2026, at 6:30PM, a meeting will be hosted at First Lutheran Church at 1206 Whitehall Road. Next, MCC will present on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 5:30PM at the White Lake Community Library located at 3900 White Lake Drive in Whitehall. The series will conclude on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 7PM on the main campus in Overbrook Theater.
The town hall meetings will provide an opportunity for community members to learn more about the college’s current priorities, ongoing initiatives, and long‑term planning efforts. College leadership will share updates on the millage restoration and how it supports facilities improvements, academic programs, and student services, and will invite questions and feedback.
“Muskegon Community College is committed to transparency, accessibility, and meaningful engagement with the community we serve,” said President John Selmon. “These town hall meetings offer citizens an opportunity to listen, learn, and ensure our work continues to reflect the current and future needs of Muskegon County.”
Community members are encouraged to bring questions and review the college’s website at https://www.muskegoncc.edu/millage/ in advance. There, voters can review a short video explaining the millage, review frequently asked questions and answers, and share their thoughts by completing a short survey.
The operating millage restoration proposal asks voters to approve 0.2980 additional mills for thirty years to restore MCC’s operating rate to the 2.4 mills originally approved in 1993. It comes after decades of reductions caused by the Headlee Amendment, which lowers millage rates when property values grow faster than inflation. As a result, MCC’s operating millage has been reduced to 2.1020 mills. The proposed restoration would return the rate to its original level and generate approximately $2.1 million annually to support the college’s operations and facilities.
“A lot has changed since 1993,” said Dr. John Selmon, President of Muskegon Community College. This proposal is about maintaining the foundation that supports student learning and access to opportunities across our community,” said Selmon.
