Community Encouraged to Attend Final Town Hall Before Vote

Thursday, July 9, 2026

Muskegon Community College (MCC) is inviting community members to attend its final public town hall meeting before the August 4, 2026, Operating Millage Restoration election. The meeting will take place Thursday, July 23, at 7 p.m. in Overbrook Theater on MCC’s main campus, 221 S. Quarterline Road in Muskegon.

The town hall will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about the college’s current priorities, ongoing initiatives, and long-term planning efforts. College leadership will explain the proposed operating millage restoration, how it supports facilities improvements, academic programs, and student services, and answer questions from community members.

“This is the final opportunity for residents to come together, ask questions, and learn exactly what this proposal means for Muskegon Community College and our community,” said Dr. John Selmon, President of Muskegon Community College. “We encourage everyone to attend, hear the facts, and make an informed decision before Election Day.”

Community members are encouraged to bring questions and review the college’s millage website www.muskegoncc.edu/millage before attending. Visitors can watch a short video explaining the proposal, review frequently asked questions, and complete a brief community survey.

The operating millage restoration proposal asks voters to approve 0.2980 additional mills for 30 years to restore MCC’s operating millage rate to the 2.4 mills originally approved by voters in 1993. The proposal comes after decades of reductions caused by the Headlee Amendment, which lowers millage rates when property values increase faster than inflation. As a result, MCC’s operating millage has been reduced to 2.1020 mills. Restoring the rate to its original level would generate approximately $2.1 million annually to support the college’s operations and facilities.

“A lot has changed since 1993,” said Selmon. “This proposal is about maintaining the foundation that supports student learning and access to opportunities across our community.”

Muskegon Community College is celebrating 100 years of providing high-quality, affordable education and workforce training that strengthen the region. Offering over 70 degrees, certificates and areas of study, MCC remains committed to student success, community partnership, and preparing the next generation of learners and leaders.
