MCC Invites Community to Visit Gettysburg This Fall

Muskegon Community College’s (MCC) Center for Experiential Learning is offering students, faculty, staff, and community members the opportunity to participate in a four-day educational experience in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, October 9–12, 2026. Those interested are encouraged to register and submit payment by July 30, 2026, to receive a $100 early registration discount.

Attendees will explore Gettysburg’s role as the site of the largest battle of the Civil War and one of the most important turning points in American history. Through guided tours and firsthand experiences, participants will learn about the three-day battle in July 1863, where more than 50,000 soldiers who were killed, wounded or went missing, and the significance of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

“Reading about Gettysburg in a book or online is one thing, but walking the battlefield and seeing the places where history was made is an entirely different experience,” said George Maniates, chair of Muskegon Community College’s Social Sciences Department. “I encourage people to be part of this journey and experience Gettysburg firsthand. Opportunities like this don’t come along often, and this truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The trip includes round-trip motorcoach transportation, three nights of lodging, three breakfasts, one dinner, admission to Gettysburg National Military Park, the Gettysburg Museum and Cyclorama, a guided battlefield tour led by historian Christina Moon, an after-hours tour of the Cyclorama with curator Chris Brenneman, and a meet-and-greet with sculptor Gary Casteel.

Participants will also visit the Flight 93 National Memorial during the 25th anniversary year of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Registration includes access to an online course designed to supplement the travel experience.

The trip departs from Muskegon Community College, 221 S. Quarterline Road in Muskegon.
