WHY OCEANOGRAPHY?
Oceanography is fascinating!! It’s the study of the ocean in all its forms — from the crashing waves on the shore to the deepest, darkest trenches of the seafloor. It blends elements of biology, chemistry, geology, and physics to help us better understand the most dominant feature of our planet: the ocean.

Why does this matter? The ocean covers over 70% of Earth’s surface and plays a central role in regulating weather, climate, and life itself. A basic understanding of oceanography is vital for understanding Earth’s climate system, the health of marine ecosystems, and the human impact on our blue planet.
For the average citizen, oceanography provides critical context for understanding major global issues like:
• Climate change and sea level rise
• Ocean acidification and its effect on coral reefs and fisheries
• Marine pollution and plastic waste
• Coastal erosion, hurricanes, and tsunamis
• The health of oceans as a food source and economic driver
At MCC, oceanography (OCE 101) offers an exciting, interdisciplinary look at the ocean’s physical, chemical, geological, and biological systems — and how they’re all interconnected. In this course, you’ll explore topics like ocean currents, waves and tides, deep sea exploration, seafloor spreading, marine life zones, and the ocean’s role in the global climate system. You’ll also examine how human activities are affecting ocean health and what it might take to preserve it for future generations.
Whether you’re considering a career in marine science, environmental studies, or just want to better understand the ocean’s role in everyday life, oceanography is an eye-opening and essential course for anyone living on planet Earth.
