MCC Lecture Series Presents: Drought and Health in a Warming World: Global Trends to Regional Gaps

MCC’s 2026 Winter lecture series continues with “Drought and Health in a Warming World: Global Trends to Regional Gaps.”

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Presented by Dr. Azar Abadi, Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham, the lecture will examine how climate change–driven drought will increasingly affect human health worldwide, while highlighting the uneven impacts that will be experienced by different regions and populations. Dr. Abadi will explore global trends such as rising temperatures, prolonged dry periods, and water scarcity, and will connect these environmental changes to health outcomes including food insecurity, malnutrition, heat-related illness, respiratory problems, and mental health stress.

The lecture will also address how vulnerable communities—particularly in low-resource or drought-prone regions—will face greater health risks due to limited infrastructure, health care access, and adaptive capacity, underscoring the need for region-specific research, policy responses, and public health strategies to close these gaps.
