Learn, Understand, Support: A Community Education Series on Substance Use and Recovery

Join the Jayhawk Hub and Student Life, in partnership with Facing Addiction Now, for a four-part community education series exploring substance use, recovery and the ways addiction affects individuals, families and communities.

Through research, evidence-based practices and real stories from people with lived experience, the series offers an opportunity to learn, challenge stigma and discover practical ways to support health, safety and recovery in our communities.

Session 1: Substance Use Disorder 101 & Stigma Reduction
Oct. 14 | Noon–1:30 p.m.

Learn about substance use disorders, including risk and protective factors, how substances affect the brain and body, and the recovery process. Participants will also explore common misconceptions and the impact of stigma while learning how person-first language can promote dignity and support.

Session 2: Harm Reduction 101
Oct. 28 | Noon–1:30 p.m.

Explore the principles of harm reduction and how evidence-based strategies can reduce the negative consequences associated with substance use. Participants will learn how to meet people where they are, communicate effectively, build trust and distinguish harm reduction from enabling behaviors.

Session 3: Prescription Drug Misuse 101
Nov. 11 | Noon–1:30 p.m.

Learn how prescription drug misuse affects people of all ages and backgrounds. This session covers commonly misused medications, warning signs, prevention strategies, safe medication storage and disposal, overdose awareness, Narcan, dangerous medication combinations, counterfeit medications and drug-checking resources.

Session 4: Real People, Real Stories
Dec. 2 | Noon–1:30 p.m.

Hear firsthand stories from individuals who have experienced substance use and recovery. Through honest and personal accounts of challenges, turning points and recovery, this session offers a deeper understanding of addiction while highlighting resilience, hope and the possibility of recovery.
