MCC Center for Theater Presents: “Be More Chill,” the musical

MCC’s Center for Theater presents Be More Chill, the hit musical by Joe Iconis that became a grassroots internet sensation before taking Broadway by storm. Packed with humor, heart, and a futuristic twist, this contemporary musical explores the challenges of fitting in, finding confidence, and staying true to yourself.

The story follows Jeremy Heere, an average high school student who struggles with anxiety, social status, and the desire to be noticed. When he discovers a revolutionary technology called a SQUIP—a tiny supercomputer that can be implanted in the brain to guide every decision—Jeremy sees a chance to become popular, win over his dream girl, and finally take control of his life. But as the SQUIP’s influence grows, Jeremy must decide whether the pursuit of popularity is worth sacrificing his individuality.

Blending relatable teenage experiences with science-fiction elements, Be More Chill has been described as a mix of high school comedy and cautionary tech tale. The musical examines themes of identity, belonging, friendship, and self-acceptance while asking timely questions about technology’s role in our lives. Featuring an energetic pop-rock score and memorable characters, Be More Chill delivers an uplifting message about embracing who you are rather than trying to become someone else.
