Muskegon Community College’s Overbrook Art Gallery will host a new exhibit titled “It’s Hip to be Square” featuring the work of local artist, photographer, and surfer Marc Hoeksema. The exhibit runs March 16 – April 24, 2026, with an opening reception on Monday, March 16 from 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM. Admission is free and open to the public.

Hoeksema, a West Michigan-based artist, has worked in photography and fine art for over 20 years. His work is known for its minimalist style, careful use of light and shadow, and connection to nature and water. In addition to photography, he is an active surfer and kiteboarder on Lake Michigan, and his experiences on the water influence much of his creative work.

“Both The City of Muskegon and Muskegon Community College have a rich tradition of appreciating and supporting the arts,” said MCC Art Faculty member Chip Vander Wier. “Marc Hoeksema’s work beautifully blends the natural character of our lakeshore region with artistic expression. His connection to Lake Michigan and the visual language he creates from it make this exhibit especially meaningful for our community, and we’re proud to host his work at the Overbrook Art Gallery.”

Visitors will have the chance to meet Hoeksema during a gallery talk on Wednesday, March 18 from 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM. He will discuss his work and creative process.
