Muskegon Community College Lecture Series (MCC) continues with “Selling Voting: How Ecommerce Marketing Tactics Can Influence Civic Engagement,” Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 6:00 PM. The lecture will be held in The Stevenson Center, room 1300, located on MCC’s main campus at 221 S. Quarterline Rd.
In an era where attention is currency and algorithms shape our decisions; civic organizations face the challenge of capturing public interest and inspiring participation. This lecture, led by Dr. Scott Cowley, Associate Professor of Marketing at Western Michigan University, will explore how the same data-driven, highly targeted techniques used by ecommerce brands can be leveraged to strengthen voter engagement, increase turnout, and reimagine how civic participation is promoted.
Dr. Cowley’s research and teaching focus on the intersection of marketing, technology, and behavior—making his insights especially relevant as communities seek innovative ways to encourage informed and active citizenship.
“Conversations like this are vital because they bridge the gap between disciplines we don’t often see connected,” said Andrew Wible, MCC Faculty and Lecture Series Coordinator. “Understanding how marketing principles can be used for civic good helps us think differently about engagement—It’s not about convincing people what to think but encouraging them to take part and make a difference.”
