Muskegon Community College (MCC) has launched a community survey to gather public input on a potential operating millage restoration that could appear on the August 2026 ballot. The proposal would ask voters to restore MCC’s operating millage to the original 2.4 mills approved by voters in 1993.
“Community input is essential as we consider this next step,” said MCC President Dr. John Selmon. “We want to hear directly from county residents to better understand their opinions and perspectives before any decisions are made.”
Over the past 30 years, the Headlee Amendment has gradually reduced MCC’s operating millage from 2.4 to 2.1295 mills. “This lowered MCC’s operating revenue even as the community’s educational needs have grown,” said Selmon.
Restoring the millage to 2.4 mills would generate an estimated $1.7 million annually and allow MCC to maintain daily operations and address essential improvements such as repairing or replacing aging roofs and updating heating and cooling systems. Needs also identified in a recent long-term facility study include improvements to classrooms, student spaces, restrooms, service areas, Overbrook Theater, and athletic facilities.
For the average homeowner in Muskegon County, restoring the millage to 2.4 mills would represent a 0.2705 mill increase. For a $250,000 home, the cost would be about $30 per year, or nine cents a day.
The survey process will be conducted independently. “All survey responses will be collected and analyzed by a Michigan-based research firm, and individual responses will remain confidential,” Selmon said.
The survey is now open and will remain available through 11:59 p.m. on January 30.
