Muskegon Community College Mourns Passing of Former President, Dr. Frank P. Marczak Jr.

Wednesday, January 21, 2026

Muskegon Community College (MCC) is mourning the passing of former president Dr. Frank P. Marczak Jr., whose career at MCC spanned nearly three decades and whose leadership helped shape the institution during a period of significant growth and change.

Dr. Marczak served as president of Muskegon Community College from 1995 to 2004, following many years in academic and administrative leadership roles at the college.

His service to MCC began in 1977 and included serving as Associate Dean of Mathematics, Science, Technologies, and Occupational Education; Interim Dean of Instruction and Dean of Faculty; and Vice President/Dean of Faculty.

“Dr. Frank Marczak’s influence is still felt at Muskegon Community College today,” said MCC President Dr. John Selmon. “His leadership helped guide this institution through pivotal moments. He personally helped me during the first year of my presidency as a mentor and friend. He will be missed.”

During his tenure at MCC, Dr. Marczak provided leadership during key milestones and challenging moments in the college’s history. Under his leadership in various roles, MCC’s Nursing Program became a full college program in 1980, the Stevenson Center was constructed and opened in the mid-1990s, and the college navigated the early days of campus internet access in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He also led the institution through the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks, and supported initiatives such as the launch of the Global Awareness Festival in 2001.

Beyond MCC, Dr. Marczak was active in statewide higher education efforts, serving in leadership roles within Michigan’s community college system and professional associations. His involvement reflected a broader commitment to advancing access to education, workforce development, and community partnerships—priorities that continue to define the mission of public community colleges.

Muskegon Community College extends its condolences to Frank Marczak’s wife Marlene, his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives and careers were influenced by his years of service and leadership.

In December 2025, Dr. Marczak’s son, Greg, was posthumously honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award, the highest recognition MCC bestows upon faculty.

A Celebration of Life will be held to honor and remember Dr. Marczak on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 2 pm. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate the legacy left behind.
