Thursday, February 5, 2026

Muskegon Community College (MCC) is inviting the public to a free screening of Up From the Bottoms: The Search for the American Dream on Thursday, February 5th at 6:30 PM in celebration of Black History Month.

The film is a powerful documentary from Clear Vision Films that brings to life the compelling journeys of African Americans who migrated from the rural South to Muskegon, Michigan, in search of a better life during and after World War II. Narrated by acclaimed actress Cicely Tyson, this award-winning film shares personal stories of resilience, struggle, and hope as more than fifteen individuals now in their 80s and 90s reflect on leaving behind segregation and hardship for opportunities in the industrial North.

Directed by James Schaub and produced by Jim and Rod Schaub, the 56- to 58-minute documentary highlights the massive migration of African Americans who came to work in Muskegon’s war factories and on the industrial front lines. It explores the cultural challenges they faced, the racial barriers they overcame, and the thriving communities they helped build — capturing a vivid piece of local and national history. The film has earned significant recognition, including honors at international festivals and inclusion in the Library of Congress Veterans History Project.

This special screening is part of MCC’s commitment to honoring the rich history and contributions of African Americans.
