Dr. Andy Wible, a philosophy instructor at Muskegon Community College, is pleased to announce that his book Golf and Philosophy has been translated into Chinese by Hainan Publishing House. The new translation was unveiled on April 23, 2024, at Peking University, with distinguished guests including the Vice Chairman of the China Golf Association, the founder of the Beijing Golf Association, the founder of the Peking University Golf Association, and 40 associates in attendance.
Originally published by Kentucky University Press in 2010, Golf and Philosophy has been updated and expanded for its Chinese readers. This edition features fold-out reviews of each chapter by notable Chinese figures in golf, philosophy, and business, insights from Golftec’s latest swing study to improve scores, and a new preface by Dr. Wible.
“It is an honor to have Golf and Philosophy translated into Chinese,” said Dr. Wible. “Golf is a growing sport in China, and the book incorporates many ideas from both Chinese and Western philosophy. I hope it encourages deeper thinking about golf and significant philosophical questions, potentially fostering improved cross-cultural relations.”
The Chinese translation has received positive initial feedback. Hai Wen, founding dean of the Peking School of Business, described the book as “the moral bible of golf.” He Zhonogkai, golf coach and professor at Peking University, commented, “I was surprised to find that golf, a Western elite sport, aligns so well with Chinese thought.”
In addition to this translation, Dr. Wible has recently contributed a chapter titled “The Affable Gaffer” to the book Ted Lasso and Philosophy. This chapter explores the moral benefits and limits of coach/player friendships.
