Promise expands for 2015 grads and later, with new $500 incentive and GPA adjustment
Tuesday, March 31, 2026
Muskegon Community College will host an upcoming Muskegon Area Promise 101 session for graduates from Muskegon County high schools (or homeschools) in 2015 or later. MCC will provide information about the recent Promise expansion.
Starting in Fall 2026, there is no longer a high school grade point average (GPA) requirement for the Muskegon Area Promise. Every year for the last five years, GPA eligibility thresholds have been adjusted and ranged from 3.5 to 2.5. With each new year, came the same mission – Helping more students. The new 2026 expansion is monumental and includes a retroactive scholarship to graduates from 2015 – present. A $500 allowance for books, supplies, and equipment required for courses of instruction will also be offered to all Promise Scholarship recipients during every term they are enrolled, with a maximum annual allowance not to exceed $1,500. The event is open to prospective students of any age, families, and community members seeking guidance on how to access the scholarship and enroll at the College.
The in-person session will be held on June 16, 2026, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Stevenson Center, Room 1300, on MCC’s main campus at 221 S. Quarterline Road. College staff from admissions and financial aid will be available to answer questions and provide step-by-step assistance. Light refreshments will be offered.
“There has never been a better time for past and future Muskegon County high school graduates to learn how the Promise works,” said Muskegon Community College Director of Admissions Sarah Luker. “The expansion of the Promise opens the door for so many more students to access a college education here at MCC.”
The scholarship continues to require an annual FAFSA submission and applies to graduates of Muskegon County high schools or homeschools. The updated eligibility requirements will take effect beginning with the Fall 2026 semester and do not apply to MCC’s upcoming summer classes that begin in May.
