Take a journey to Pluto and its mysterious moons, then venture even farther into space and explore distant comets during “Edge of Darkness,” the newest presentation at Muskegon Community College’s (MCC) Carr-Fles Planetarium.

Thefree show, which is suitable for ages 6 and older, will be presented at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Aug. 25 through Oct. 29, with the exception of Sept. 8. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. for seating.

“People sometimes don’t realize what an incredible resource we have right here at Muskegon Community College,” said MCC’s Math and Physical Department Staff, Tamera Owens. “The Carr-Fles Planetarium isn’t just free—it’s an amazing way for both children and adults alike to explore the wonders of our universe.”

Before the show, visitors are encouraged to stop by the John Bartley Science Museum located across the hall from the planetarium. The museum’s current exhibit, “World of Water,” is also free. Attendees should allow approximately 15 minutes to explore the exhibit.

After each “Edge of Darkness” screening, guests can also remain seated for a free demonstration of the current night sky, projected onto the planetarium dome.

“For so many in Muskegon County, the rising costs of groceries, gas and everyday expenses have really taken a toll,” said Owens. “This is a fun opportunity to visit the far reaches of our solar system without spending a penny.”

The Carr-Fles Planetarium is the only free public planetarium in West Michigan. It provides an educational and immersive experience by projecting images of stars, planets, and constellations onto a domed ceiling. The facility features 44 theater-style seats and five spaces for guests who use wheelchairs, making the experience accessible to all.
