Suicide Remembrance Month to conclude with candlelight vigil

Wednesday, September 23, 2026

In partnership with the Suicide Prevention Coalition, Muskegon Community College (MCC) will host a community-wide candlelight vigil Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, to honor those lost to suicide, support those facing mental health challenges and remind the community that no one has to face those struggles alone.

The vigil will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge of the Art & Music Building at MCC. The event will provide an opportunity for the campus and broader community to come together in remembrance, support survivors and stand together in hope.

Suicide remains a significant public health concern in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 48,824 people died by suicide in 2024, making suicide the nation’s 10th leading cause of death. Suicide ranks as the No. 2 leading cause of death among college students across the country.

“We want our students to know that they are supported here at Muskegon Community College,” said MCC Counselor Trefny Chelesvig. “We want students to reach out when they need help.”

The event will be facilitated by Scott Teichmer, a suicide prevention specialist with more than 15 years of experience. The public is encouraged to attend.

For students struggling with mental health, MCC offers short-term, in-person counseling on campus. Students also can access online counseling through TimelyCare, a free, 24/7 virtual health and well-being service that provides on-demand access to mental health support.

The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Muskegon County seeks to raise awareness and reduce stigma in order to create a suicide safer community by promoting hope, connectedness, and healing. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, or HealthWest Warmline at 231-722-HELP (4357).
