We are so excited that you are interested in attending Muskegon Community College! The following information can be used for those interested in applying as an F-1 Visa student.

Apply & Complete Admissions Process

Submit Your Academic Records

Submit official copies of your Academic Records. These should include official copies of grades, diplomas, certificates, and degrees from high school and any colleges you may have attended. If they are not in English, translation must be provided.

English Proficiency

Please submit one of the following scores to show English Proficiency:

  • TOEFL iBT with a score of 61
  • TOEFL Essentials with a score of at least 7
  • Bright Standard English Test with a score of 450
  • MET with a score of 5.0
  • Pearson PTE Academic with a score of 45
  • IETLS score of 6.0 or higher

If you need assistance with the TOEFL, there are online tutors available. They can be reached at info@thelanguageprofessor.com

Students who are from an English-speaking country are exempt from sending in English Proficiency.

Financial Information

Health Insurance Information

  • Submit proof of health insurance coverage for you while studying in the United States.
  • Please submit documentation via email to international@muskegoncc.edu

Note: Muskegon Community College does not offer health insurance coverage for international students. However, below is a list of websites that offer health insurance to international students at reasonable rates:

MCC is not involved with any contract negotiations between the insurers and insured. MCC is not responsible for any disputes, breaches of contract, cancellation notices that may arise between the insurers and the insured. The college can accept no responsibility for listings.

Wait for Acceptance

Once all documentation is received and processed, you will receive an I-20 and an acceptance letter and you will be ready to schedule your visa appointment.
If you are a Canadian student, a visa is not required. Only an I-20 is required.
After completing all previous steps AND receiving acceptance, you will want to move on to the Accepted International Student Checklist in the next tab.

After acceptance to Muskegon Community College, you will proceed with the following steps:

Log into your MyMCC

You can obtain your username by clicking here and selecting the Helpful Information tab.

Please note: As an international student, you do not have a Social Security Number, instead you will use the last four digits of your student ID number that you received in your acceptance letter.

  • Your password will be your firstname initial + lastname initial + student ID# + !
  • Example: The password for John Student with a student ID# 1234567 would be: js1234567!

Take the MCC Placement Test

Call (231) 777-0394 or email testingcenter@muskegoncc.edu for an appointment.

Please note: you may be exempt from portions of the placement test if you meet one of the following requirements:

Reading 19+ 25+ 1 or 2

On both

Writing 19+ 26+
Math 19+ 26+ N/A
Transfer Students: 15 or more college credits with a minimum 2.0 GPA for the Reading portion.
  • Official ACT/SAT/MME/MEAP scores or college transcripts must be on file to waive placement testing.
  • All placement scores have a 3-year time limit.
  • Prospective nursing students cannot use the MEAP/MME scores or college credits to waive the reading test.

Complete Orientation

  • Orientation is mandatory for all new students.
  • In addition to the mandatory Orientation, there will be a mandatory international student orientation after the semester starts.

Register and Pay for Classes

  • Register for the classes in your MyMCC.
  • Pay for your classes or set up a payment plan in your MyMCC.

Schedule and Meet with the Designated School Official (DSO)

  • Call (231) 777-0599 or make an appointment here.
  • It is mandatory to meet with the DSO upon arrival not only for assistance with completing this checklist but to make sure rules and regulations in accordance with DHS, SEVIS and the college are being followed.
  • While listed as step 6, contact should remain consistent after acceptance.

  • Check your MCC email often for information and notifications.
  • Familiarize yourself with Blackboard.

Does MCC have dorms?

MCC does not provide housing for students. Please review the International Welcome Packet for some potential housing options nearby.

Yes, when applications and documents are received, you will get an email to confirm.

When can I arrive in the United States once I have been approved for admission?

You may arrive up to 30 days prior to the start of the semester. It will show your first available date to enter the US on your I-20 form.

Am I allowed to have a job in the United States?

Unfortunately, the F1 visa disqualifies you from working outside of MCC. If you are interested in working, you can do so ON CAMPUS after your first semester.

Only if you are employed on campus.

Do you provide any resources for Mental Health?

Yes! Our counselors on campus are licensed, meaning that they can help with both academic concerns as well as personal concerns.

Am I eligible for any financial aid?

Unfortunately, due to being on an F1 visa and having to prove income, you are not eligible for federal or state funding. However, there are potential scholarships available. You can view potential scholarships in your MyMCC.

  • Be careful to note specific deadlines and due dates for scholarship applications
  • NOTE: You can only apply for scholarships that do NOT require a FAFSA.

Do I need to take placement test?

Yes, all new international students are required to take a placement test (unless you have completed the SAT/ACT). You cannot fail the placement tests; they are used as a starting point. These scores will place you in courses that will help you develop the necessary skills for success in future classes.

Can I study English as a Second Language at MCC?

No, International students are required to provide English Proficiency as a part of enrollment. The nearest ELS center is in Allendale, MI which is approximately 40 minutes from Muskegon.

Will you notify me if there is a problem with my application?

Yes, an email will be sent out immediately if any information is missing or if anything needs to be verified.

Can I submit my application and documents separately?

You can submit your application and documents separately; however it will cause a delay in processing. It is recommended that you submit all your required documents together to ensure a timely and efficient processing of your application.

Can I get a driver’s license?

International students and scholars and their dependent family members who will be in Michigan for more than four months are considered Michigan residents and must apply for a Michigan Driver’s License if they intend to drive. An International Driving Permit issued by your home country, by itself, does not permit you to drive in Michigan. If you will live in Michigan for more than four months, then you are a Michigan resident and you must apply for a Michigan Driver’s License.

International Transfer Students

International students who want to transfer to Muskegon Community College from another school must provide the following required documentation:

NOTE: If you are interested in being a College Guest (taking classes here to transfer back to your home institution) or in Dual Enrollment, the above checklist does not apply. You only need to submit a copy of your current I-20 and photo ID to international@muskegoncc.edu for acceptance.
