A new Muskegon Community College “soft skills” course will provide participants with interpersonal and organizational traits in demand by today’s employers.
Beginning this fall at MCC, the six-week class will be taught twice weekly from 6-9 p.m. The skill sets being imparted include: problem solving, presentation, oral and written communication, organization, attitude adjustment, and team building.
“An estimated 80 to 85 percent of area residents trying to find employment or trying to hold onto employment do not have these essential skills,” said Mary Williams, Coordinator of Continuing Education at MCC. “Employees need to have conflict resolution abilities, as well as effective interpersonal communication skills. We want to teach people how to deal with personal problems, interact with others and adapt to challenges.”
A similar course, offered in the past, yielded great results, said Williams, adding that more classes in different areas of job training will be developed at MCC. The course must have a minimum of six students and/or employees enrolled to be offered this fall.
