“Gender and Culture: Insights from the Study of Anthropology”

March 13, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

“Gender and Culture: Insights from the Study of Anthropology” will be the focus a talk by Muskegon Community College faculty member Dr. Evin Rodkey on Wednesday, March 13, at 7 p.m. in the Sturrus Technology Center, 388 W. Clay Ave. In downtown Muskegon.

The lecture, which is sponsored by the MCC Center for Experiential Learning, is free and open to the public.

“Gender identity is a fundamental aspect of what it means to be human, a system of social categories with positions everyone must fit into,” explains Rodkey. “Yet how gender categories are constructed and how this can differ by place and change over time is not always well understood. “

“Furthermore, interaction among genders shows how gender construction can both bring us together and drive us apart.  Drawing on research from anthropology, or the study of culture and human history, this presentation will show the different forms gender can take and explore some of the fascinating insights that arise from gender interaction.”
