Shoreline Symphony Concert

To launch its 2018-2019 concert season, Outside the Box, the Shoreline Symphony will present a performance entitled “Intriguing Instruments, Surprising Sounds” on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m., at the Frauenthal Center, 425 West Western Ave., Muskegon, MI.

Admission is $10 for adults and $2 for students and children under 18. The works on the program highlight rarely heard instruments, unusual performance techniques, and unexpected combinations of sounds. Several of the pieces are solos, featuring: Dr. Hans Martin Werner, a professional solo whistler, performing works by Rodrigo, Mozart, and Mussorgsky; Allen Beck, playing the theremin and the twelve-foot long alphorn; and Mark Thogerson, playing the mandolin.

Two works by American composer John Cage will be performed.  His “Radio Music” incorporates multiple live AM broadcasts, and his “Living Room Music” features objects found at home that are played as musical instruments.  Closing the program will be Hovhaness’ “And God Created Great Whales.”  Composed during the early stages of the “Save the Whales” campaign, the music combines pre-recorded whale calls with full orchestral colors.

Preceding the concert, Shoreline Symphony Director Annette Jurcevic will step “Off the Podium” to discuss the kinds of instruments featured during the evening.  Audience members are invited to learn about the creative process of inventing new sounds, the music itself, and the composers who wrote it.  The discussion will begin at 7 p.m.

Established in September 2012, the Shoreline Symphony is celebrating its seventh season of creating quality classical music for Muskegon area audiences.  Led by founding director S. Annette Jurcevic, the Shoreline Symphony brings together professional and amateur musicians who play alongside students and faculty from several area colleges and universities.  It is the only all-volunteer orchestra in the Muskegon area to include woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings.
