Baseball Sweeps Henry Ford 9-3, 2-1;  Jayhawks End Season with 30-26 Mark

The MCC baseball team swept visiting Henry Ford CC 9-3, 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon to finish the 2012 season with a 30-26 record.

Jayhawks pitcher Adam Poel (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) notched his seventh win on the season while striking out eight batters in game one. John Jacoviak (Custer, MI/Mason County Cenral) had a grand slam home run and Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) scattered four hits, while M.J. Oshinski (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) had a pair of doubles.

In game two, Nick Eely (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) struck out eight HFCC batters in 6 1/3 innings.   John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague) got out of a jam and picked up the win. Greg Chulski’s (Marne, MI/Kenowa Hills) pinch hit single in the bottom of the seventh scored Oshinski for the victory in the season finale.

MCC, Ancilla College Trade Wins in Baseball

The MCC baseball unit downed host Ancilla College 4-2 in 12 innings before dropping a 3-1 decision on Tuesday afternoon in Donaldson, IN.

Now locked in a three-way tie for 11th place with their 8-16 conference mark, the Jayhawks were led by Trent Brisboe’s (Hastings, MI/Hastings) two hits, including the go-ahead RBI. Adam Poel (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) pitched nine innings with one earned run  and John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague) threw three scoreless innings for the win.

In game two, Brisboe had two of MCC’s three hits. The Jayhawks are now 28-26 overall.

Baseball Splits Twin Bill at Mott CC

After losing 8-2 in its first game, the MCC baseball squad scored 18 runs on 18 hits in an 18-3 rout over host Mott CC on Sunday afternoon in Flint, MI.

Now 27-25, the Jayhawks were paced by Greg Chulski’s (Marne, MI/Kenowa Hills) two hits in the first contest. In the second game, Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) had three hits and four RBI while Travis Cohoon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) added a trio of hits and three RBI.

Freshman righthander Nick Eely (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) got the win for the Jayhawks who are now 7-15 in the conference

Baseball Splits Twin Bill with Lake Michigan CC

Producing only five hits total in Thursday afternoon’s doubleheader against Lake Michigan CC, the Jayhawks won the opener 2-1 before losing 1-0 in the nightcap in Benton Harbor, MI.

LMCC, at 7-13, stayed ahead of 6-14 MCC for the 11th place spot in the MCCAA standings. The Jayhawks are 26-24 overall, while LMCC is 10-26.

MCC freshman righty Adam Poel (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) notched the win in game one, while sophomore righthander John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague) earned his seventh save. Despite holding LMCC to one run, David Foster (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) got the loss in the second contest.

Grand Rapids CC Downs MCC Baseball 10-1, 4-2

The MCC baseball team dropped a doubleheader to visiting Grand Rapids CC, 10-1 and 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

In game two, the Jayhawks, now 5-13 in the league and 25-23 overall, nearly broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when the hosts loaded the bases but could not drive in the go-ahead run against league-leading GRCC. Greg Chulski (Marne, MI/Kenowa Hills) paced MCC with three hits and two RBI in the nightcap.

Baseball Drops Doubleheader to St. Clair 1-0, 7-1

The MCC baseball squad fell to host St. Clair County CC 1-0 in nine innings and 7-1 in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Sunday in Port Huron, Mich.

Jayhawk freshman pitcher Adam Poel (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) gave up two hits and one unearned run in 8 2/3 innings in the opening loss. The 25-21 Jayhawks are now 5-11 in the league.

MCC Baseball Downs Glen Oaks 7-1, Loses 8-4

After rolling to an impressive 7-1 win over Glen Oaks on Tuesday afternoon, the MCC baseball unit fell 8-4 in the second game of the home league doubleheader.

Now 5-9 in the conference, MCC got a strong effort on the mound from southpaw Brandon Melchert (Scottville, MI/Mason County Central). He fired a six-hitter with six strikeouts. Buddy Burns (Montague, MI/Oakridge) had three hits, while Cale Gould (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) and John Jacoviak (Custer, MI/Mason County Central) each added two.

The Jayhawks, now 25-19, were paced offensively by Trent Brisboe’s (Hastings, MI/Hastings) three hits and two RBI and Buddy Burns’ two hits in game two.

MCC Earns Spilt with Lansing CC

Taking on league foe Lansing CC on Saturday afternoon, the host Jayhawks baseball squad earned a split, taking the first game 7-5 before being edged 2-1 in the second tilt.

Now 4-8 in the conference, MCC took the opener with freshman righthander Adam Poel (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) going the distance. He struck out 11 LCC batters while allowing eight hits.

In the second game, freshman lefty David Foster (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) gave up two unearned runs and three hits and registered nine strikeouts. Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) and Travis Cohoon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) had two hits apiece for the 24-18 Jayhawks

Baseball Cruises Past Alma JV 10-3, 9-4

The MCC baseball team cruised past the Alma JV on Friday afternoon, when the Jayhawks swept their doubleheader 10-3, 9-4 in Alma, Mich.

In the opener, freshman righthander Caleb Roberts (Boyne City, MI/Boyne City) earned the win and sophomore righty Josh Moll (Whitmore Lake, MI/Whitmore Lake) picked up a save.

Offensively, five Jayhawks collected two hits in the contest: Cale Gould (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge), Ryan Walling (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake), Greg Chulski (Marne, MI/Kenowa Hills), Jake Hahn (Beal City, MI/Beal City) and Joe House (Greenville, MI/Greenville).

Freshman reliever Nick Eely (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) earned the win in game two when he struck out seven Alma batters in 4 1/3 innings.

Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings) belted two hits and two RBI, while Travis Cohoon (Brighton, MI/Brighton), Ty Devine (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) and Brian Barnes (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) each added two hits.

Now 23-17 overall, the Jayhawks host Lansing CC on Saturday.

MCC Baseball Defeats Concordia JV 11-3, 7-5

The Jayhawks baseball squad ran its record to 21-17 on the season after sweeping visiting Concordia University JV by 11-3 and 7-5 margins in near-freezing temperatures on Tuesday afternoon.

MCC first-year pitcher Adam Poel (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) earned the opening game victory, supported by two-hit performances from both Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings)and Ryan Walling (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake). Ty Devine (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant)had three RBI.

In the nightcap, John Jacoviak’s (Custer, MI/Mason County Central) single produced the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning. He, Cale Gould (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) and Joe House (Greenville, MI/Greenville) each recorded two hits in the game. Reliever John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague) notched the win on the mound

MCC travels to Alma on Friday before hosting Lansing CC on Saturday.

Melchert Shuts Down Davenport JV; Cohoon Gets Five Hits in Baseball Split

Brandon MelchertMCC freshman southpaw Brandon Melchert (Scottville, MI/Mason County Central) tossed a three-hit shutout and freshman shortstop Travis Cohoon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) got five hits on Saturday afternoon, when the Jayhawks split with visiting Davenport JV.

The hosts lost 4-2 before pounding out a 10-0 decision in the nightcap.

Cohoon and teammate Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings) each got two hits but MCC could only register five total in the opening loss.

In the second game, Cohoon added three more hits. Freshman Ryan Walling (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) added a pair of hits and three RBI. The 19-17 Jayhawks host Concordia on Tuesday

Poel Shuts Out Delta CC 2-0; Jayhawks Complete Sweep with 4-2 Win

Freshman Adam Poel (Grand Haven, MI/Grand Haven) threw a complete game in a 2-0 shutout and MCC finished the sweep over Delta CC with 4-3 win in the nightcap on Thursday afternoon in University Center, MI.

Poel, a 6-3 righthander, got help from Cale Gould (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) who recorded two hits.

In the second contest, David Foster (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) earned the victory, while sophomore righthander John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague) picked up his sixth save for the 18-16 Jayhawks, who upped their league mark to 3-7. Offensively, Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings) and Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) both had two hits.

MCC hosts the Davenport University JV on Saturday at 1 p.m .

Kellogg CC Beats MCC Baseball 3-1, 5-2

Visiting Kellogg CC defeated the MCC baseball team, 3-1 and 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon. The Jayhawks are now 16-16 on the season and 1-7 in conference play.

Offensively, Ty Devine (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) had two hits in the opener, while Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) and Jake Hahn (Beal City, MI/Beal City) each produced a pair of hits in the second game.

MCC travels to Delta CC for a doubleheader on Thursday

Macomb CC Posts Two 2-1 Wins over Baseball

The visiting MCC baseball squad lost both of its games to Macomb CC by identical 2-1 scores on Saturday afternoon.

The first game went into eight innings. Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) had two hits for the Jayhawks. In the second contest, freshman first baseman Ty Devine (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) produced two hits.

MCC falls to 16-14 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

MCC, Davenport JV Split Baseball Decision

The MCC baseball squad won 5-4 and lost 5-4 against the Davenport JV on Thursday afternoon in Grand Rapids, MI.

In the opener, the Jayhawks were paced by M.J. Oshinski (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) and Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings) with two hits apiece. Sophomore righty Ryan Truschke (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City) got the win in relief, while John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague), another sophomore righthander, earned the save.

Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) and Joe House (Greenville, MI/Greenville) both registered two hits in the second contest for MCC, which is now 16-12 on the season.

Baseball Splits Twin Bill at Kalamazoo Valley CC

Freshman Ty Devine’s (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) home run led MCC to a 6-5 win in eight innings over host Kalamazoo Valley CC on Tuesday afternoon, when the Jayhawks were edged 7-5 in the second contest of a league doubleheader.

Now 15-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference, MCC relied upon sophomore hurlers Ryan Truschke (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City) and John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague) for the win and save, respectively. First baseman Devine added a single to pace the Jayhawks offense.

In the nightcap, MCC was riddled by seven errors along with stranding 13 runners on the base paths.

Jackson CC Nips MCC Baseball 5-3, 9-7

The MCC baseball squad opened league play with two heartbreaking losses on Saturday, when visiting Jackson CC edged the Jayhawks 5-3 and, in 12 innings, 9-7 .

Now 14-10 overall, MCC owned a 3-1 lead in the first game before two consecutive Jackson batter were hit by pitches and eventually scored to even the game at 3-3. The visitors pushed across two late game runs for the win. Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) had a pair of hits for the hosts.

In the nightcap, sophomore Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings) and freshman Travis Cohoon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) both had two hits, with Cohoon adding three RBI

Aquinas Hands Baseball 13-3 Loss

A multiplicity of MCC fielding errors and walks allowed by its pitchers led a 13-3 drubbing by visiting Aquinas College on Thursday afternoon.

The Jayhawks fall to 14-8 overall while Aquinas improves irs season mark to 10-12.

MCC opens conference play at home on Saturday when they face Jackson CC.

Jayhawks Baseball Beats Alma JV 13-0, 5-1

The MCC baseball squad took two games from visiting Alma College JV, 13-0 and 5-1, on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman right hander Bryant Westra (Muskegon, MI/Catholic Central) tossed a one-hitter for the win in the opener. Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings) had three hits and two RBI and Drew Brackett (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) had a pair of hits.In the nightcap, reliever David Foster (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) threw six no-hit innings and struck out 10 Alma batters. Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) paced the Jayhawks offense with three hits.

Now 14-7, MCC returns to action at home on Thursday, when the Jayhawks face Aquinas in a nine-inning tilt beginning at 4 p.m.

Baseball Sweeps St. Joseph’s 12-7, 10-5

The MCC baseball squad improved its record to 12-7 on the season on Sunday, when the Jayhawks took two games from host St. Joseph’s College JV, 12-7 and 10-5, in Rensselaer,Ind.

In game one, sophomore righty Ryan Truschke (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City) picked up the win in relief and John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague)  struck out the last two hitters with the bases loaded to pick up the save. John Jackoviak (Custer, MI/Mason County Central) belted a three-run homer and Greg Chulski (Marne, MI/Kenowa Hills) produced three RBI.

In game two, MCC produced 12 hits, with Buddy Burns (Muskegon MI/Oakridge), Drew Brackett (SpringLlake, MI/Spring Lake), Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings), and Drew Johnson (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer) each with two hits. John Jackoviak had a bases-loaded double.  Nick Eely (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) earned the win while throwing 4 1/3 innings of shutout baseball.

The Jayhawks have their home opener on Tuesday at 2 p.m. against. Alma.

Baseball Splits Twin Bill with St. Joseph’s JV

Caleb RobertsThe MCC baseball squad split a doubleheader on Saturday against the St. Joseph’s (IN) College JV, losing the opener 3-2 and taking the second contest 6-2.

The Jayhawks split a Double-header with St. Joseph JV’s today losing the first game 3 to 2 and winning the 2nd game 6 to 2.

Outfielder Drew Brackett (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) hammered out a pair of doubles for the Jayhawks in the opener. Second baseman Cale Gould (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) had two hits to lead MCC in the nightcap. First baseman Ty Devine (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) ignited the Jayhawks six-run sixth inning rally with his two RBI.

Freshman righthander Caleb Roberts (Boyne City, MI/Boyne City) earned the victory on the mound. He scattered five ghits and struck out seven St. Joe’s batters. MCC is now 10-7 overall.

Adrian JV Sweeps MCC Baseball 3-0, 10-3 on Sunday

The Adrian College JV pitchers combined for a 3-0 no-hitter against the MCC baseball team and the hosts followed with a 10-3 victory in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in Adrian, MI.

Adrian’s four-game weekend sweep dropped the Jayhawks record to 9-6 this season. Second baseman Cale Gould (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) had two hits in the nightcap.

Baseball Loses to Adrian JVs 3-2, 10-0

The MCC baseball squad lost a doubleheader, 3-2 and 10-0, to the Adrian JVs on Saturday afternoon in Adrian, MI.

Trent Brisboe paced the Jayhawks with his three hits in the opner, while Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) and M.J. Oshinski (Grand Rapids, MI/Catholic Central) each added a pair of hits. In the second contest, Adrian held MCC to just three hits, two of them registered by Buddy Burns. The Jayhaws hurlers allowed 11 walks and the defense played poorly, according to MCC Coach Cap Pohlman, whose team drops to 9-4 on the season.

Baseball Downs Jackson CC 13-1; Finish Southern Swing with 9-2 Record

The MCC baseball team defeated Jackson CC 13-1 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Friday morning to close out the team’s southern trip with a 9-2 record.

Freshman righthander Caleb Roberts (Boyne City, MI/Boyne City) threw a three-hitter and struck out three batters to pick up the win. Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) had four hits and Brad Toller (Brighton, MI/Brighton) had three hits and a trio of RBI to pace the Jayhawk batters

Baseball Splits with Mercyhurst NE

The MCC baseball team split its doubleheader on Thursday with Mercyhurst NE in Myrtle Beach, SC, where the Jayhawks won the opener 7-5 before losing 15-9 in nine innings.

Now 8-2 overall, the Jayhawks were led by Drew Brackett (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) and Brian Barnes (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) with three hits apiece. Adam Poel (Grand Haven, MI.Grand Haven) earned the win throwing five and two-thirds innings. John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague) got the save.

In the second game, the MCC pitchers allowed 13 walks to seal their fate. Trailing 9-6, MCC tied the contest at 9-9 in the seventh. Drew Brackett  paced the Dragon attack with a trio of RBI.

Epic Comeback Helps Baseball Sweep Southeastern CC 10-8, 7-3

Trailing 8-2 with two outs in the last inning, the MCC baseball team pounded out eight runs for a stunning 10-8 victory over Southeastern CC in the first game of a Wednesday doubleheader in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Jayhawks took the nightcap 7-3 to improve their record to 7-1 on the season.

“It was amazing,” said MCC Coach Cap Pohlman. “We had a lot of clutch hits with two outs.”

John Moll (Whitmore Lake, MI/Whitmore Lake) started the rally with his two-out double in the bottom of the seventh and finished it nine batters later when he belted a walk off, three-run homer. Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings) had two hits and two RBI. Cody Merkins (Nunica, MI/Fruitport) got the win in relief.

In the second game, Freshman lefty Brandon Melchert (Scottville, MI/Mason County Central) got the win and reliever Dimitri Innis (Hart, MI/Shelby) earned his second save of the season. Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) had two hits and two RBI, while Greg Chulski (Marne, MI/Kenowa Hills) had a two RBI single.

Baseball Beats Alma JV 12-4, Falls 7-3 to Mercyhurst NE

John MollTrailing 4-0 against the Alma JV, the MCC baseball team rattled off 12 unanswered runs for a 12-4 decision on Tuesday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. In their second game, the Jayhawks fell 7-3 in nine innings to Mercyhurst Northeast. It was MCC’s first loss of the season.

Buddy Burns (Muskegon, M/Oakridge), Drew Brackett (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) and John Jackoviak (Custer, MI/Mason County Central) each had two hits and two RBI for the Jayhawks against Alma. Sophomore righthander Josh Moll (Whitmore Lake, MI/Whitmore Lake) pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the win. Against Mercyhurst NE,  MCC second baseman Travis Cohoon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) had three hits.

Undefeated Baseball Team Takes Two from Stanley CC

The MCC baseball team ran its record to 4-0 on Monday afternoon after the Jayhawks defeated Stanley CC (N.C.) 5-4 and 7-3 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

MCC owned a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning of game one before Stanley used Jayhawks errors to knot the contest at 4-4. Sophomore shortstop Trent Brisboe (Hastings, MI/Hastings) drove in the winning run in the seventh. He had two hits and two RBI. Earlier, Drew Brackett (Spring Lake, MI/Spring Lake) stole home in the third. Reliever John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague) earned the win.

In the nightcap, Ryan Truschke (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City) threw three scoreless innings in relief for the win. Sophomore southpaw Dimitri Innis (Hart, MI/Shelby) got the Jayhawks out of a jam by tossing the final two outs in the seventh for his first save of the season.

Sophomore Buddy Burns (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) led the Jayhawks’ attack with three hits. Trent Brisboe had two hits and an RBI, Travis Cohoon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) had two hits, Joe House (Greenville, MI/Greenville) had two hits and two RBI, and John Jacoviak (Custer, MI/Mason County Central) had two hits and two RBI.

Baseball Sweeps West Virginia Wesleyan JV in Opener

The MCC baseball team opened the 2012 season by sweeping a doubleheader from West Virginia Wesleyan JV 4-3 and 14-4 on Sunday afternoon in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Freshman righthander Adam Poel (Grand haven, MI/Grand Haven) pitched six innings and struck out seven to earn the Jayhawks victory in the opener, Sophomore John Martin (Montague, MI/Montague) got the save. MCC got four hits in the contest, two each by John Jackoviak (Custer, MI/Mason County Central) and Travis Cahoon (Brighton, MI/Brighton).

In the second game, MCC broke open the contest early to allow Coach Cap Pohlman to substitute freely. Freshman southpaw David Foster (Mt. Pleasant, MI/Mt. Pleasant) went three innings and record five strikeouts for the win. Jackoviak had three RBI and Drew Brackett (Spring Lake, Mi/Spring Lake) had a pair of hits.
