Samantha Zimmer Places 21st in Nation

MCC freshman Samantha Zimmer (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) finished 21st in the nation at the NJCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country Championships held Saturday at Ocotillo Golf Club in Hobbs, N.M.

Zimmer ran the 5K course in 20:21.09. South Plains Natoya Goule led the 268-runner field with her winning time of 18:45.06.

Iowa Central CC won the team championship with 84 points, followed by Central Arizona 91, El Paso CC 105, South Plains 152, Macomb CC 153 and Lansing CC 166. In all, there were 34 teams in the event. Zimmer was the lone Jayhawks female runner making the trip to nationals.

Women’s Cross Country Seventh in Region; All-Region Zimmer Qualifies for National Meet

MCC’s Samantha Zimmer (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) captured all-regionhonors and qualified for the national championship meet with her ninth place finish on Saturday in Lansing, Mich., where theJayhawkswomen’s cross country team placed seventh in the region.

Zimmer covered the 5K course at Grand Woods Park in 19:13 to earn the trip to nationals at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, N.M. on Nov. 12.

“All the women had personal best times for the season,” said MC Coach Mike Smith.

The other MCC finishers were Jordan McGowen (White Cloud, MI/White Cloud) 36th in 22:24, Kayla Ingell (Grant, MI/Grant) 42nd in 23:07, Caitlyn Tyler (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall) 43rd in 23:09, and Juliana Alvarado (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon) 46th in 23:21.

Macomb CC, led by its medalist Kayla Pfund in 18:43, won the regional championship with 25 points. The other team scores were: Lansing CC 47, Jackson CC 100, Mott CC 125, Cuyahoga CC 129, Oakland CC 163, Muskegon CC 176 and Vincennes 187.

Zimmer Paces MCC at Jayhawk Invitational

Sam Zimmer led MCC at the 2011 Jayhawk Cross Country Invitational.Samantha Zimmer’s (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge)ninth place led the MCC women’s cross country team to fourth place at the Jayhawk Invitational on a windy and chilly Friday afternoon at University Park Golf Course.

Hope College won the meet with 36 points to narrowly edge Lansing CC with 38, followed by Mott CC with 68 and MCC with 97.

Mott’s Mayce Varacelli of Linden, MI, took first place by finishing the 5K course in 18:59, followed by Lansing CC’s Ashley Hamilton with 19:07 and Hope’s Taylor Mattarella in 19:11.

Zimmer paced the Jayhawks with her time of 19:53. The other MCC runners and times were: Jordan McGowen (White Cloud, MI/White Cloud), 19th in 22:33, Juliana Alvarado (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon) 22nd in 23:20, Caitlyn Tyler (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall) 23rd in 23:37, Kayla Ingell (grant, MI/Grant) 24th in 24:24 and Ashley Hutchins (White Cloud, MI/White Cloud) 25th in 25:50.

“Sam ran well,” said MCC Coach Mike Smith. “She likes to run in front of the home crowd. That was her fastest time ever.”

“It was really exciting to have some future All-Americans running here,” he added, referencing the unattached runners and red-shirted runners from the University of Michigan, MSU and Grand Vallet State, nine of whom finished in under 19 minutes.

Trio of MCC women runners compete at Michigan Intercollegiate Championships

Three MCC runners were entered in the Michigan Intercollegiate meet on Friday afternoon at Hillsdale College.

MCC’s Sam Zimmer (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) ran the 5K course in 21:13.80. Teammate Jordan McGowen (White cloud, MI/White Cloud) was 126th in 23:58.32 and Juliana Alvarado (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon) took 139th in 24:41.84.

Hillsdale’s Amanda Putt led the field in 18:10.51. Saginaw Valley State won the 17-team competition.

Women’s Cross Country Places 12th at Lansing CC Invite

The MCC women’s cross country team placed 12th out of 18 teams at the Lansing CC Invitational on Friday afternoon at Grand Woods Park in Lansing, MI.

“The ladies finished with their best team time 1:55:28 of the season,” said MCC Coach Mike Smith.

Freshman Samantha Zimmer (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge)led all Jayhawks runners with her 36th place time of 20:07. The other MCC point scorers were: Jordan McGowen (White Cloud, MI/White Cloud) 76th in 23:27; Kayla Ingell (Grant, MI/Grant) 77th in 23:38; Julianna Alvardo (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon) 78th in 23:38; Caitlyn Tyler (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall) 84th in 24:35. Ashley Hutchins (White Cloud, MI/White Cloud) placed 88th in 25:11.

 Zimmer Leads MCC Women at Spartan Invite

Sam Zimmer (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) paced the MCC women’s cross country runners with her 163rd place finish at the Spartan Invitational Friday afternoon at Michigan State.

No team scores were kept in the six-kilometer race held at Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing. Rachel Patterson, running without any team affiliation, led the 231-runner field in 20:16.

Other MCC finishers included: Jordan McGowen (White Cloud,MI/White Cloud) placing 178th in 27:18, Kayla Ingell (Grant, MI/Grant)  taking 215th in 28:20, Juliana Alvarado (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon) 219th in 28:41, Ashley Hutchins (White Cloud, MI/White Cloud)  223rd in 29:33 and Mikki Narowitz  (Muskegon,MI/Mona Shores) 224th in 29:39.

Women’s Cross Country Fourth at Jets Invite

The Muskegon CC women’s cross country squad placed fourth in the four-team Jackson CC Jets Invitational on Friday afternoon in Jackson, Mich.

Lansing CC won the 5K race scoring 32 points, followed by Jackson CC with 54, Mott CC with 65 and Muskegon CC with 88. Mott’s Mayce Varacalli was the medalist with her winning mark of 20:19.5.

Sam Zimmer (Muskegon, MI/Oakridge) paced the MCC unit with her fifth place showing of 21:13.7. The other Jayhawks runners finished in a pack. Kayla Ingell (Grant, MI/Grant) was 25th in 24:25, Jordan McGowen (White Cloud, MI/White Cloud) 26th in 24:47, Juliana Alvarado (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon) 28th in 25:46 and Caitlyn Tyler (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall) 31st in 26:24.

Cross Country Teams Fourth at Hope

The MCC women’s cross country squad opened the 2011 season on Saturday at Hope College, where Mike Smith’s Jayhawks placed fourth in the four-team Vanderbilt Invitational meets.

Hope College won the women’s meet with 24 points, followed by Albion 41, Cornerstone 69 and MCC 118. Albion’s Lauren Kettle took first in 19:02. Freshman Samantha Zimmer Muskegon, MI) led MCC finishing 20th in 22:04. Other Jayhawks scorers were freshman Jordan McGowan (White Cloud, MI) 23rd in 23:49, freshman Kayla Ingell (Grant, MI) 24th in 24:43, freshman Juliana Alvarado 25th in 25:41 and freshman Mikki Narowitz (Muskegon, MI) 26th in 25:48.
