TJ Barnes Will Wrestle at MCC

On Thursday, May 8, Tobias “TJ” Barnes of Summit Academy signed his athletic scholarship letter of intent to wrestle the next two years at Muskegon Community College. TJ selected MCC over other schools such as Cleveland State. TJ finished his high school career as a two-time state placer, and Division Two 160-pound runner-up. Losing in the state finals to Huron High School’s Logan Ritchie, TJ will leave Summit Academy as its all-time wins leader. He also holds the record for wins in a season. He also finished in the top 12 at this years FloNationals tournament in Pennsylvania.

Wrestlers Finish 9th in Nation; Zack Cooper, Tyler Stenberg and Donovan Fouchey Earn All-American Honors

The MCC wrestling team cracked into the Top 10 with its 9th place finish at the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Championships which concluded Saturday, March 1, at the Spokane (WA) Convention Center.

Northeastern Oklahoma A&M won the overall team championship with 169 points, followed by Northwest College 149, Clackamas CC 139, Colby CC 84.5, Nesosha County CC 83, North Idaho 72, Iowa Central CC 66, Ellsworth CC 65.5, Muskegon CC 62, and North Iowa Area CC 60.

Freshman Zachary Cooper (Big Rapids, MI/Whitehall) at 133 pounds led the way for the Jayhawks. He wrestled back to finish third after suffering an upset in the quarterfinals.

“Zachary has been so impressive all year,” said MCC Coach Mark Brunger. “You see a lot of kids fold when their dreams of a championship are dashed. Zack just got more focused and challenged himself to take come back and finish third.”

Freshmen Donavan Fouchey (Oscoda, MI/Oscoda) at 197 pounds and Tyler Stenberg (Twin Lake, MI/Reeths-Puffer) at 149 pounds also garnered All-American honors, finishing 4th and 6th respectively.

“I’m very proud of this team,” said Brunger. “They are young, hard-working and tenacious. Great things are on the horizon for Muskegon Jayhawk wrestling.”

MCC also had four other wrestlers finish just one match away from becoming All-Americans: freshman Cody Stenberg (Twin Lake, MI/Reeths-Puffer) at 141 pounds; freshman Lukas Gilmore (Greensville, MI/Greenville) at 165 pounds; freshman Joe Sika (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall) at 174 pounds; and sophomore Shawn Chamberlain (Dexter, MI/Dexter) at 285 pounds.

MCC Second at District Championships; Nine Jayhawk Wrestlers Qualify for Nationals

The MCC wrestling team finished second in the Central District/National Qualifier tournament on Sunday at Triton College in River Grove, IL.

During the competition the Jayhawks qualified nine of the 10 weight classes for the national tournament. Lincoln College edged MCC by four points for the title.

“While we fell short of our goal to come in here and win the district, we are still in a good position to perform well at the national tournament,” said Coach Brunger. “We have qualified nine wrestlers and all of them will be major point scorers for us at nationals.”

The team had an outstanding semifinal round sending nine wrestlers into the championship match and one into the consolation round, building a 22-point team lead. Unfortunately, only freshman Zack Cooper (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall) at 133 won a match in the last round, and the lead evaporated.

Runners up finishes were freshmen: Devane Dodgens (Chippewa Hills) at 125; Cody Stenberg (Reeths-Puffer) at 141; Tyler Stenberg (Reeths-Puffer) at 149; Lukas Gilmore (Greenville) at 165; Joe Sika (Whitehall) at 174: Steven Malloy (Morley-Stanwood) at 184; Donavan Fouchey (Oscoda) at 197; and sophomore Shawn Chamberlain (Dexter) at 285.

The NJCAA National Championships will be held Feb. 28 – March 1 in Spokane, Washington.

The final team scores were: Lincoln, 995, MCC 95.5, Harper College 83.5, Triton College 29.5, and Waubonsee College 14.0.

Wrestlers End Regular Season in Perfect Form

The Jayhawks traveled to Allendale, Mich. to wrestle in the GVSU Laker Classic this Sunday, Feb. 2.

The MCC wrestling team found perfection Sunday as they won every individual match in the tournament that was against an opposing school. “As far as I know it has never been done by us in tournament format,” said an excited Coach Brunger. “As far as outcomes go, you just can’t wrestle any better. The important thing is that we maintain our focus and carry this kind of performance into the post-season.” The Jayhawks entered wrestlers in 8 of the 10 weight class, and came home with 8 individual champions.

Champions for the Jayhawks included freshman Devane Dodgens (Remus, MI/Chippewa Hills HS/125), freshman Zack Cooper (Big Rapids, MI/Whitehall HS/133), freshman Cody Stenberg (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS/141), freshman Tyler Stenberg (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS/149), freshman Joe Sika (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS/174), freshman Steven Malloy (Newaygo, MI/Morley-Stanwood HS/184), freshman Donavan Fouchey (Oscoda, MI/Oscoda/197) and freshman Logan Morningstar (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS/285)

Runner up performances were recorded by freshman Thomas Szymula (Mount Pleasant, MI/Mount Pleasant HS/125), sophomore Andrew Nold (Dexter, MI/Chelsea HS/149), freshman Chad Maks (Hartland, MI/Hartland HS/197) and sophomore Shawn Chamberlain (Dexter, MI/Dexter HS/285), sophomore Darian Holmes (Woodhaven, MI/Woodhaven HS/285) finished third.

In two weeks the 8th ranked Muskegon wrestlers will head to Triton College in River Grove, IL to compete for a Central District team championship and individual berths to the NJCAA National Championships which will be held February 28th and March 1st in Spokane, Washington.

Muskegon Wrestlers Shutout Triton CC and Upset Lincoln CC

The 8th ranked Muskegon wrestling team traveled to Lincoln Ill. Saturday, Jan. 18 looking to continue their momentum from their 6th place finish at the NWCA National Duals. They did just that as they blanked the 16th ranked Triton squad and then built up a 21-0 lead against the 6th ranked Lincoln wrestlers and held on for a 27-19 victory.

“We have two concerns at this stage of the season, peaking at the right time and staying healthy,” said Coach Brunger. “These guys are near peaking in performance and we are right on track, unfortunately we had a few injuries at the end of the Lincoln dual so we have our fingers crossed that we heal quickly. Regardless, we feel great about our performance, winning all ten matches against a ranked opponent and scoring an upset is definitely a great day!”

The Jayhawks were led by 2-0 performances by freshman Devane Dodgens (Remus, MI/Chippewa Hills HS), freshman Zachary Cooper (Big Rapids, MI/Whitehall HS), freshman Cody Stenberg (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS), Elvis Peacock (Hersey, MI/Chippewa Hills HS), sophomore Shaquill Bell (South Haven, MI/South Haven HS) and freshman Mason Courtright (Shelby, MI/Shelby HS). Freshman Tyler Stenberg (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) and freshman Joe Sika (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS) were both 1-0 on the day.

The event ended the dual meet season for the Jayhawks. They finished with a 9-4 record and a 6th place national finish at the NWCA National Duals last weekend. Their focus now shifts to tournament scoring as they eye a regional championship and a top 5 finish in the country in February. Up next is the Alma Open on Saturday, January 25th.

Zack improved to 16-0 on the season while Lukas is now 18-1. The Jayhawks had a third champion in freshman Joe Sika (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall) who won his first tournament championship of the season at 174 pounds and is getting better every week. The Jayhawks also had strong showings by finalists’ freshman Elvis Peacock, 149 lbs (Hersey, MI/Chippewa Hills HS) and freshman Donavan Fouchey, 197 lbs (Oscoda, MI/Oscoda HS).

Five other Jayhawks finished in the top six of the tournament. Jayhawk Wrestler Lucas Gilmore Crowned Champion at Niagara Open

The 9th ranked Muskegon CC Wrestlers traveled to Sanborn, NY Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Thunder Wolves Open which featured a many four year schools including: NCAA Division I University of Buffalo and Penn State University, and Division II Mercyhurst College. Leading the charge for the Jayhawks was freshman Lukas Gilmore (Greenville, MI/Greenville HS) who won the championship at 165 pounds.

Four wrestlers finished in the top 4 of their respective weight classes. Gilmore finished 4-0 on the day and defeated very tough opponents including NCAA division I wrestler Ryan Therrian of Buffalo in the semi-finals and Chris Nevinger of Niagara CC who is a 3x New York State Champion and is ranked 10th in the country at 165 pounds. “Lukas was great all day, he is an extremely smart kid and just might be the hardest working wrestler in a room.” exclaimed Coach Brunger. “He is a great pleasure to coach.” Also having excellent days were 125 pound freshman Devane Dodgens (Remus, MI/Chippewa Hills) who finished 3rd and only loss was to a NCAA Div. II All-American from Mercyhurst, 174 pound freshman Joe Sika (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS) who finished 4th and 184 pound freshman Mason Courtright (Shelby, MI/Shelby HS).

Wrestlers Post 1-2 Mark at Olivet Duals; Jayhawk’s Zack Cooper Still Unbeaten

For the second week in a row the Jayhawk wrestling squad was the only junior college in the house, this time on Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Olivet Duas. This week however, the overmatched Jayhawks were battling the best the opposing team could put on the mat in dual meets instead of a tournament format.

The 19th ranked Jayhawks wrestled Olivet in round one and lost 31-9 winning just two matches in the contest. In the second round MCC faced Trine University and won all nine contests including an exciting first period pin by 133 pounder freshman Zack Cooper (Big Rapids, MI/Whitehall HS) over Trine University’s junior Brandon Preston, who is ranked 8th at 133 pounds in NCAA Div. III. In the last round MCC dropped a tough dual against Indiana Tech who is ranked 11th in the NAIA as a team by a score of 24-12.

“Against Indiana Tech we had many opportunities to win matches that could have turned the tide. We really got better as the day went on and we learned a lot. We will be improved and ready when we get back on that mat at Niagara,” Brunger added. “When Coach Brissette (Olivet head coach) emailed me a month ago asking who we wanted to wrestle my response was simple, we’ll wrestle anyone,” said Coach Brunger. “We are very talented, but really young. In order to learn we need to be exposed for our mistakes against more seasoned juniors and seniors.”

7th ranked Zack Cooper remained unbeaten on the season, stretching his record to 13-0. Other wrestlers with winning records on the day were 165lb freshman Lukas Gilmore (Greenville, MI/Greenville HS), 184lb freshman Mason Courtright (Shelby, MI/Shelby HS), 197lb freshman Donavan Fouchey (Oscoda, MI/Oscoda HS) and 285lb sophomore Shawn Chamberlain (Dexter, MI/Dexter HS) who were all 2-1 on the day. Three MCC Jayhawk Wrestlers Crowned Champions at Trine University Invitational

The 19th ranked Jayhawk wrestlers traveled to Trine University on Saturday, Nov. 15th as the only Junior College amongst a field of NCAA Division III and NAIA schools. Undeterred the Jayhawks claimed three individual championships, four runner-up finishes, and eight wrestlers place in top four. “The crazy thing is we gave a few starters the weekend off to heal up and spend time with family, we only entered wrestlers in eight of the ten weights and we still performed this well,” said Coach Mark Brunger. “That is a credit to our training and the overall dedication of the team to make one another better each and every day.”

The Jayhawks were opening eyes all day as they sent seven wrestlers to the finals in six out of the eight weight classes they entered. For the second week in row teammate’s freshman Lukas Gilmore (Greenville, MI/Greenville HS) and sophomore Shaquill Bell (South Haven, MI/South Haven HS) made the finals at 165 lbs. Gilmore won the championship as Bell defaulted due to a swollen eye. “Both of these guys have just been dynamite so far this year,” exclaimed Brunger. Not to be outdone freshman Zachary Cooper (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS) took home the crown at 133 lbs. and freshman Donavan Fouchey (Oscoda, MI/Oscoda HS) did the same at 197 lbs. Joining Bell as runners-up was freshman Cody Stenberg (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) at 141 lbs., freshman Tyler Stenberg (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) at 149 lbs., and freshman Joseph Sika (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS) at 174 lbs. Freshman Chad Maks (Hartland, MI/Hartland) was 4th at 197 lbs.

The MCC will compete next at the Olivet Duals on Saturday, Nov. 23rd

The 19th ranked Jayhawk wresters opened the season on an emotional night against two highly ranked opponents and came out victorious in both contests on Friday night, Nov. 8.
