Muskegon Community College will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in October with a series of free lectures, films and exhibitions.
Sponsored by the MCC Offices of Academic Affairs and Student Services, the events begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, in Stevenson Center Room 1200 with a showing of the “Harvest of Shame: 50 Years Later.” The film features CBS News correspondent Byron Pitts return to Florida’s vegetable fields, where a half century earlier legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow first exposed the deplorable migrant workers conditions in 1960 America on CBS Reports’ documentary“Harvest of Shame.”A discussion will follow the film.
On Tuesday, Oct. 9, Jessica Cruz, the associate director of Ferris State University’s Center for Latin@ Studies, will speak about “Diversity within the Latin and Latin American Community.” Her talk begins at 6 p.m. in Stevenson Center Room 1100. A graduate of Columbia University Teacher’s College, Cruz founded the Latin@ Empowerment Conference: Increasing Access to Higher Education in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Throughout October in Gerber Lounge, “Celebration of Hispanic Heritage,” a diverse mix of ancient Latin American relics and artifacts from many countries, will be on display.
