A Great Michigan Read book discussion of “The Women of Copper Country,” Mary Doria Russell’s gripping account of the valiant effort in 1913 to unionize the copper miners in Calumet, MI, will take place on Thursday, April 14, at 7 p.m.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is being held at the Norton Shores Branch of the Muskegon Area District Library, 705 Seminole Road, in Norton Shores. Refreshments will be provided. Sponsors include Michigan Humanities Great Michigan Read, the Muskegon Area District Library, and Muskegon Community College (MCC).
Five MCC faculty members will offer their own different perspectives of the inspiring historical novel, published in 2019, about Annie Clement, the courageous woman who started a rebellion by leading a strike against the largest copper mining company in the world.
The MCC panelists and their academic areas are Nick Budimir, Sociology; Diana Casey, Geography; Theresa Kanoza, English; George Maniates, History; and Kurt Troutman, Political Science.
